Re: Did the $63000 Tcraft sell?
On balance, Freightpilot27, Taylor Maid, and their boisterous band of outlaw aviators forced me at gunpoint to consume $63,000 worth of beer...
As I mentioned to Joel, if we could manage to exhume Ronald Reagan and put him back into office for a year or so, his magnificent aircraft would likely have sold for the price he was hoping to get.Last edited by VictorBravo; 08-04-2010, 08:26.Taylorcraft : Making Better Aviators for 75 Years... and Counting

Re: Did the $63000 Tcraft sell?
That plane is a beauty and I would love to have it too. But if we see the day a older T-Craft brings 63K it will mean that we are in a super inflated economy . I bought a very nice T-Craft in 1977 for $3400.00.There is a real world price for things and especially nowadays. Maybe he can find that one in a million buyer ...but it will be a long wait I would think. Not to degrade the
man's airplane either it is a work of art..But art is in the eye of the beholder
and your average T-Craft buyer is not going to pay that kind of money IMO.

Re: Did the $63000 Tcraft sell?
No, my BC12-D didn't sell in the auction at Oshkosh. The opening bid was $20,000... then a bid for $25,000... and the highest bid was $27,500, well below my minimum. I bought the plane for $20,000 five years ago, and then spent several times that restoring it.
Mark Long's 1940 BC-65 from Maine didn't sell in the auction, either.
Only 5 of about 50 planes in the auction sold, and some drew no bids at all.
Saw three flyers on the bulletin boards around the Oshkosh grounds advertising Taylorcrafts for $19,900, $20,000, and $24,500. Why can't we sell them for at least as much as equivalent Cubs?
My wife says the price on my plane is now drastically reduced from $63,000 to $49,000. Fresh annual just done in July, about 75 SMOH, compression 79/78/79/79, pristine, lots of extras...Attached FilesJoel Severinghaus

On a happier note, photos attached of our own Bill Berle in his E-Z Flap Handle booth and Suzy's always tastefully accessorized Taylorcraft. I think Bill did a great public service for aviation safety by drinking Suzy's beers after the tradeshow closed each evening.Joel Severinghaus

Re: Did the $63000 Tcraft sell?
I have sold three Taylorcrafts this past month..... all on web site www.barberaircraft.com recall that I am a State Auctioneer , Auctions are not the way to go with 50 aircraft at Oshkoch. I sent my comments a long time ago. The "fair market value" is STILL what a willing seller and a motivated buyer can agree upon. I do a lot of pre-buy for both buyer and seller sometimes working for both at he same time; with THEIR permission.
Back to a big Sky-Diving week-ed with a Shorts Caravan ; I call her SLUFF.

Re: Did the $63000 Tcraft sell?
Boss I think you mean either a Shorts Skyvan (which absolutely justifies the SLUFF nickname for sure) or a Cessna Caravan which probably is too sleek and thin for that name
Speaking of the Shorts Skyvan, it always seemed to me that it would make a really great flying motorhome outfitted with some sort of Murphy bed and a kitchen counter. A whole family could drive that thing around the countryside visiting national parks and wilderness areas, with some amount of safety and twin engine reliability, and never need a tent or a hotel room. I believe it has reasonable short field performance, and I will guess it was designed to operate off of 1950's English grass airfields.
I have no idea how much fuel the turbines use, which would quickly determine if it was an average family or a rich family going on this adventure. But a run-out Skyvan could probably be converted to some other type of more fuel-efficient engine... the aluminum V8 conversions are fairly efficient for the power when you pull back from takeoff power.
Just daydreaming...Taylorcraft : Making Better Aviators for 75 Years... and Counting

Re: Did the $63000 Tcraft sell?
The Belfast-derived Shorts Skyvan is colloquially referred to as "The Shed" over here.
It is commonly used for meatbombing duties (it has a rear door like a Hercules C-130), and its design & production was financed by illicit money from New England during "the Irish rebellion", right up to an certain date when the Americans learned what blood money is all about.
It is very utilitarian, and does exactly what it says on the tin. Beauty it may not be, but useful it is. It has very narrow & stubby wings...half its lift comes from the body.
Bill is quite right...it is very short-field for its size & payload, and one operates from our local 650-metre grass meatbombing centre.
