  • CFI-SP Sport Pilot Instructor

Hey...I just passed my practical test yesterday and I am now a Sport Pilot CFI.

I am a 20+ year Private Pilot and I like to try something new with aviation every few years to keep myself sharp. I recommend this to any of you guys with a Private or Sport Pilot's License...It was a great learning experience...I have a new respect for ANY CFI.

The requirements for application are listed at sportpilot.org

Basically I had to study for and pass a knowledge test on aeronautical knowledge and also a test on Fundamentals of instruction....then do a little flying with a CFI....I did about 4 hrs....gather a bunch of instructional materials, get signed off per FAR requirements and take the practical test....The test was long (6hrs) but not particularly difficult....there is a lot of study guide aids out there. Anyway...I started June 16th and finished yesterday....so just over a month. Now I can give instruction in LSA (Airplane) Land & Sea. Like I said....great learning experience and FUN. Cost me about $800.....

Knowledge Test (CFI - Airplane) $150
Knowledge Test (Fundamentals of Instruction) $150
    Practical Test $400
Flight Instruction & Fuel $100(+-) A friend of mine did instruction & sign offs pro-bono

      Re: CFI-SP Sport Pilot Instructor

Oh yea...if any of you guys do this remember you have to fly the check ride from the right seat whilst giving instruction on maneuvers to the examiner. It was fun....I made him handle the brakes There is not a lot of difference between the CFI-SP an the CFI written and practical tests....The fundamentals of instruction test is the same test, the aeronautical knowledge test is 70 questions....basically the same only no radio navigation questions....lots of aerodynamics, fundamentals of flight, FAR's, weather, Instruments (pitot/static system), charts, cross country....etc, etc....like I said, It was a great learning experience!

The only down side is the training you do can't be used for someone wanting to get their private ticket. The FAA needs to get that fixed. Tom

          Congrats Dano!

Any thoughts on what you would charge to get my float LSA float rating later this fall? Do you have an examiner up there?

Not True! All of the time counts towards a Private....See the link http://www.sportpilot.org/questionsYou just need to complete the remaining requirements for the Private.

For a sport pilot float rating (or any additional privileges in LSA) you just need Instruction with endorsement from me and a checkout from a second instructor certified on floats and a log book endorsement from him....two separate instructor's endorse your log book and your legal...no examiner required....and yes...we can work something out for you to do it.

Can you fly from the right seat by yourself to get the feel from that side. I know the brakes are only on the left side but I fly from a grass strip and don't use then except on run-up mag etc check.
Could I put a non-pilot in the left seat to practice?

yes...the brakes can be held from the right side for run up....just swing your legs over to that side....otherwise, it's easy to get stopped without them.....I practiced from the right by myself.

Dano, the 20 hours minimum training required for the private pilot can only come from a sub part "H" flight instructor. There may also be a problem if the training is not logged for the private certificate also when it is done. Like turns around a point in accordance with CFR 61.107B and 61.311. There has been a FAA ruling on the instruction. You can check out what this website has to say http://sport-pilot-training.com/private-pilot/ or take a look here http://www.121five.com/admin/Feature...P_onesheet.pdf

                        Re: CFI-SP Sport Pilot Instructor

Well, leave it to the FAA to make things complicated.....even the DPE who did my practical was sure that all the time counted...and that only the remaining additional requirements need to be fulfilled by using a CFI (subpart h)....there will be a lot of non-compliance if they don't get this straight with everyone....including the "Expert" in ask the expert at EAA. I don't really care since I am primarily interested in giving float endorsements for LSA eligable aircraft to Sport Pilots and Private Pilots who intend to operate LSA's. By the way, my buddy is a CFI part H over here and we'll work together with students wishing to transition to a Private Pilot's License and we'll make sure they have all the requirements met prior to taking their practical test. The FAA wants all the paperwork accurate and they want proficient pilot applicants taking the practical test...we'll get them there. Their logs will be all up to date
