  • Bungee Installation

    I have the Shock Cord Installation tool from Aircraft Spruce (#06-16600) and for the life of me, I can't remember how it goes on the airplane to remove and reinstall the cords. Anybody able to help here?
    I know the newer style works better, but this is the one I have and I've used it in the past, I just can't get the picture in my mind and my 50 year old brain is not pulling up that file.

    Regards,
    Vincent

      Got a picture of the tool you are trying to use? A lot easier if we know which type you have.

              OK, that's different. I don't think I have ever seen a bungee tool that looks like that. Hopefully someone on the group recognizes it and can remind you how it works. I don't have a clue. All the ones I have seen looked more like giant "C" clamps with areas that held the bungees in position till you could roll them off onto the fuselage and gear.

              The one Dave Rude sells is in the attached picture. Most look something similar. Dave is at;

                That is the kind of tool that I have. You use it from inside with the threaded portion up. One of the "lips" goes against the flange under the seat and the other goes under the shock cord. I know this is hard to describe in words, but give it a try. If you still can't figure it out contact me and I can walk you through by phone I think.

                  That looks like the tool for a Piper shock strut. I have one and it is a real prize to work. Tightening that bolt with the pressure of a shock cord is an ordeal. I don't know how well it would work on a T-Craft.

                  My dad had a bent up crow bar that he used.

                    I stared at it long enough today to finally figure it out.........it actually works pretty well, albeit not in the way one would initially think .

                      Re: Bungee Installation

                      The tool in the picture is the most common type to be found in most shops because the long straight tool is the one needed to do the bungees in the wing for the landing gear of a Piper Comanche. I have used on on the Taylorcraft and it works fairly well one bungee at a time. The problem is that it pulls up one side only. Some beeswax on the metal helps the bungee to slide around. Tightening the nut to stretch the bungee takes some time and effort.

                      Dave Rude's is a much better tool for the Taylorcraft and well worth the money!

                          Re: Bungee Installation

                          That Piper bungee tool looks like a great way to damage an airplane or bust a couple of bones in your hands... anything can be made to work but I don't think this tool is the way to go. The reason is horsepower. That bungee can store a lot of energy, which if released accidentally easily has the horsepower to cause a major injury. I have no personal experience using the Piper tool, but if it can be "over-centered" under tension by moving the long end too far one way or another, it looks like more risk than reward.
