    Re: Rudder cables for bc-12d

    Hi Jim
    Sorry so late. Just got home. Covered my win r/h wing today. I'm a little high on nitrate dope. Good news Aircraft spruce p/n 12-00222 Page 650 on their catalog. Page 136 will have the prims or rings and bushings also the crimpable parts. Spruce west is out of the bushings. Talk to Forrest, he may have them. Don't recommend you install the bushings until routing thru the guide rings. May need a little juggling to fit them thru. If you want the cables post it here or e mail me at [email protected]. I thought I had a crimp tool. Will look tomorrow. Hard to send you that, due to size. If I find it, I'll decide whether it's feasible to send it. Hope the info helps. The tool is about 128 dollars at spruce Good Luck

      After you make a crimp you are supposed to meaure the crimp diameter and proof test the cable.

      IF you do those things and the cable passes then it is hard for me to imagine how it matters whether you use a bolted tool or a lever tool. I have used both and have both.

      My point is: measure and test your cable no matter what tool that you use.

      Second point is; I would rather trust a cable tool with bolts from a U.S. aircraft tool manufacturer like ATS than a Chinese piece of crap from Ebay so be carefull and measure and test!

      for reference;

      43.13-1b requires testing prior to installation;

      7-146. CABLE PROOF LOADS. Cable
      terminals and splices should be tested for
      proper strength before installation
      . Gradually
      apply a test load equal to 60 percent of the cable-
      breaking strengths given in table 7-3 and table 7-4, for a period of 3 minutes. Place a
      suitable guard over the cable during the test to
      prevent injury to personnel in the event of cable
      failure.

      Also see section 7-149. CABLE SYSTEM INSPECTION.

        Sounds like maybe a good shared tool (like the bungee tools). If we get together in geographic areas and buy them in groups we could share the tools. I know I am fairly close to Mike and would be willing to share in the cost for some specialized tools. Maybe a good reason to restart the Virginia Carolinas Taylorcraft club and a GREAT excuse for a Saturday flight to take the tool to the next person who needs it.
        By the way, we used to make up cables when I worked for the Navy and the test machine was in our building. A LOOOONG steel box with a hydraulic load cylinder in it to pull the cables. When a cross deck pendant (the cable across a carrier deck that stops the planes) fails the whole box jumps as well as everyone within half a mile! Even 1/4" and 1/8" cables really whack the sides of the box when they break. If even the smallest cable breaks it would kill you if it hit you (or at least take off an arm). Breaking cables are NOTHING to mess with. When you test it make sure you are out of reach of the cable if it whips out! Maybe get an old steel pipe and pull it inside the pipe.

          Hey tonyl, thanks for the reply on the rudder cables and I'll take ya up on them if there're aviation cable, I went on spruce site and they said aviation cable is different from comercial steel cable, for the lubricant they put in while manufactureing. I might have a crimper i can borrow, so no need to send that. I'm checking on the other parts. If ya gonna do it i'll send ya my address. Pay your costs, whatever. Let me know. Either that or I gotta go Spruce or Mcfarland? Or? Hope your T starts on the first swing! Jim
