  • Volare carb installed on C90-12F

For those that have thought about it; I just removed the Stromberg and installed the Volare (Marv/Scheb) MA-3SPA on the C90-12F mounted on my BC12D. The purists may scoff but for those who don't overly enjoy the whole "keep your hand on the primer on short approach" method required with the Strom's, I would recommend this installation. Paperwork wise, it's a snap because the MA-3SPA is eligable for installation per the TCDS. In my case this is TCDS E-252 but for all the C85 owners check out E-233 and E-205 for the A65. After being told "you will never find one" by a whole slew of warehouse aviation parts stores..I was turned on to Aero out of Granite City (1-800-362-3044) and they had a Volare factory overhauled model 10-4252-12 (jetted for the C90) on the shelf and the service was very good. I would recommend these guys any day.

I just flew the plane for a couple hours following the install and that instant acceleration is a joy compared to the stuttering, hesitating hysteresis of the Stromberg (yes, my idle air holes were clean). The whole install was about $1200.00 and was well worth the investment. The airbox and linkages all were compatible. As far as I can tell, the dimensions of the two carbs is very close. I have heard that Champs have some cowling interference issue, but I didn't run into any clearance or mounting issues at all. If anybody has any questions about this, please feel free to e-mail me.

I have a couple of thousand hours flying Strombergs and have never had to keep my hand on the primer or experienced the joy of stuttering, hesitating hysteresis.

    Sorry, rant off...

I recently had a sputter and near quit on takeoff...I looked over everything...assuming the stromberg was the cause....THEN I drained the fuel tank and found a clear piece of silicone laying in the bottom of the tank....Could not be seen with fuel in the tank.....Wheeew.

How bout some more details. That's scary! What kind of silicon? How big? Any idea where it came from? How have you made sure there is no more? Blow out the lines yet? Flushed the tanks? What's in the gascolator?
Inquiring minds don't want to share that particular experience!

Not a T-craft but recently had a tractor that was short on power and after removing the fuel fitting from the tank to troubleshoot a low flow condition, there was a red plastic drill shaving that appeared to be from a plastic fuel can restricting the outlet. Weird, but solved the problem. And on that old tractor, the carburator looks suspiciously similar to a T-craft carb...

Was it a Ford 8N tractor? We had one of those when I was a young teenager that I worked on a lot. When I saw the carb on my Taylorcraft, I thought it looked familiar.

I believe years ago someone had put a bead of silicon caulk around the the filler cap....the piece was shaped in that general way....matching diameter......About 2" long....the rest is who knows where.... I picked it out with a mechanics claw.....I removed the fuel lines in inspected them....A OK.....Gascolator .....A OK...The tank is clean as a whistle....but as I said....it needed to be drained to see everything clearly.....The silicon was very thin and seemed to settle around the outlet.....High power setting and changes in pitch....i.e. taking off created the intermitten problem....happened 3 times total....good thing I was on a 5 mile long lake...so I could safely land if she quit cold.
