  • First lesson

I know it's not Taylorcraft but here is a pic of my daughter after her fist lesson last night. She started hinting that she would like to take lessons about a month ago. I told her we were going flying last night which thrilled her. When we got to Hartford(HXF) I suprised her by asking if she were ready for her first lesson with Steve Krog. I did pattern work in the other Cub while they taxied around on the grass. Karly was all over the field trying to get the hang of taxiing. It was comical. They finally took off to the north. This pic is just after Steve opened the door back at the hanger. Karly hi-fived me all the way home. Several times last night she got out her new logbook and looked at that first entry. Very special!

Congratulations are due to your family. I never had the pleasure of a similar event with my three children.

That is an outstanding story and picture! Thanks for posting it. My daughters are still a few years away from this stage, but it's great to see another young person starting out on the journey of Flight.

Great picture and story Mike! It appears you have a co-pilot for your '38.

          Hey Mike,

I rented the Cub for Fathers Day. Karly and I are going to fly down to the Palmyra Fly-In. Do you have plans for Sunday?

            Re: First lesson

As often as possible, I have provided opportunities for my four children to explore flying. So far the only one that has shown any interest beyond an introductory flight is my youngest daughter. She's anxiously waiting for me to get my license so that we can go flying. I'm going to forward your story to her. With a little bit of luck she'll catch the bug.

Keep us posted on your daughter's progress.

I have found that a burning desire is the most important ingredient to successfully becoming a pilot. Looks like you have that in your daughter. Keep it fun and she will soar high!

                Hey Mike,

On Father's day I'm downstate to be with dad and the rest of the family, so no flight breakfast for me on the 20th. This Sunday, I'm thinking about going to the Watertown fly-in, but the wife may be going along (really, I'm not disappointed...) We haven't worked that out just yet. Were you planning on that one? By the way, I stopped in at Hartford a couple of Sundays ago and the cubs were out, along with the gliders. Talked with Steve a little too.

Steve Krog does have his uses! (only kidding, Steve!)

It doesn't matter that it's not a Taylorcraft...that comes later!

Hartford's a great place. A few years ago, I used Hartford as a base to take a bunch of Oshkosh camping kids flying in Mike Jones' "Ol' Blue". They loved it (as did I).

Mike, Wag your wings when you fly over. Just got home from the doctors office, got all my test results back and got a release from my doctor to go seean AME to get my medical back. Things are starting to look up, been 15 months since I've been able to fly. George

Hey George, great news! Glad things are working out finally. I did fly over a few weeks ago on my way home from a friends strip down around Minonk. I went down for the day to help him put a new horizontal stabilizer and new rotors on his RAF Gyro. I made it a point to fly by your place on the way back, but didn't see any movement, and it was getting late with about an hour left to get home. Look forward to seeing you flying around this summer. Good luck with the rest of the paperwork George.

It is one of the things that will always stick me. My daughter was 14 when she started flying the family Tcraft. She went on to become a commercial pilot, acro pilot and a racer at Reno.
