  • Material Specs?

    Hi Folks,
I am preparing my fuselage for cover and noticed that I am missing a gusset on the rear wing attachment fitting on the LHS (see photos).
My IA has the material for the gusset but would like to know the original spec on the metal?
    Does anyone have that data?
    Thanks!

    Re: Material Specs?

    Jay,

The B model should be 4130 steel of whatever thickness the other gussets happen to be. Early model T-craft would be 1025 steel, but even them you can go with a 4130 repair.

Let us know how it turns out.
    Best Regards,
    Mark Julicher

What is ser# & Model #? The "gusset" was merely an addition to the BC12D to make sure the wing atach fittings were parallel to aid in faster assembly/

That is a July ship and had the gussets fore and aft from the factory . has the fuselage been changed? Check for a 337 or log entry. Is that ser # up on the back of the plate that hangs down for the throttle, carb heat etc... it might be upside down use a bright light and mirror if tank in place.

            Re: Material Specs?

            Hi Forrest,
The log books do not show any changes, however I am missing one of them so I guess we may never know for sure. It may never had been there as I do not see any marks on the tubing around it.
The serial number is from the plate behind the throttle.
It is good to know why the factory put them on as I did not think they would add a lot of strength.
            Thanks!

              Re: Material Specs?

Went back , looked at photos, Hmmmm it would be a bit rough to add gussett now , IF he wants to, go ahead , peel back fabric wet area way out and ahve at it with fire extinguishers ready. The plate will be 4130 same thickness as other ones. It LOOKS like a repair was made in that area previously and they just forgot the "gusset" . I do know it was merely to position the "ears" for assembly , you are corrrect , they did not add "strength". my direct e-mail is [email protected]
The earlier BC-12 with 1200 gross did not have the "gussets".
