Re: Visiting Anchorage Until 14 May

Dot, whats the name of that tavern near the rr head near Anchorage, I seem to remember Tinker Tavern, it's walls were covered in calling cards and the dirt floor was peanut shells and the whole damn thing had sunk into the ground 3 or 4 feet.

IF the ceiling was covered with panties and bras, it probably was the "Bird House" about 20-25 miles out of anchorage on the Seward Highway. The whole building had tipped considerably during the 1964 earthquake and they left it that way. What really impressed me with the place was the ability of the bartender setting your beer down at the far end of the considerably tilted bar and slide it down so it would stop when it got to you. Now that's talent. Unfortunately that old Alaskan icon burned down several years ago and was never rebuilt. If you want to go to a funky bar, go to "Skinny Dick's Halfway Inn" on the highway to fairbanks. At least their T shirts are a real conversation piece.
