  • Chafe Tape

Went to buy some anti-chafe tape for my cowling yesterday...oh crap...Spruce sells three different kinds:

    1. Chafe Seal, a off white woven tape @ $17 for 15 ft.

    2. Teflon Anti-Chafe tape @ $32 for 18 ft.

    3. Teflon Coated Fiberglass Tape @ $35 for 108 ft. of 5 mil thickness, also available in 10 mil. @$49

I'm leaning toward the Teflon/Fiberglass tape, just because for $35 I can get enough chafe tape to restore 5 more T-Craft.

Anyone have experience with these products?

      Re: Chafe Tape

I used the white cotton chafe seal, glued into place, around the boot cowl and the nose bowl. It's authentic, except the factory stapled! it on rather than gluing it. There are photos in Chet Peek's book of anti-chafe tape being stapled onto nose bowls.

However, for the underside of the outboard edges of the upper cowling halves, behind the latches, I used a one-inch strip of thin adhesive felt. That keeps them from chafing against the top edge of the lower cowling.

Teflon tape I used only where it won't be visible, such as all along the underside edges of the wing root fairings, and underneath the gear leg fairings, where those trim pieces can rub against the fabric.
