    Re: Engine upgrade

A&P's can do almost all mx on a t-craft. The list of things they can't do is pretty short. They can't do an annual inspection, approve a major repair or a major alteration. They can do the major repairs and alterations and fill out the 337 form that requires, however an IA (or FAA) has to approve it. I wasn't suggesting that your IA wasn't an A&P, just that an IA isn't required in this case and sometimes people have more access to an A&P than an IA.

        Re: Engine upgrade

Derating the engine is not something the installer typically does. So to answer the question, no that wouldn't work even if the engine was derated to match a lower horsepower because the O-200 isn't on the type certificate. So it can only be installed by a supplemental type certificate (STC). Normally a field approval on a different engine is not possible, at least not in this century. Right now the only ready solution for more horsepower is to install the "juiced up C-85" with the appropriate STC. An O-200 stc is likely to appear in the future but it depends on how many months/years you are willing to wait.

My thought was to derate an o-200 to the same as a c-90, then use the stc and DanoTs 337 to get it approved.

How would you derate the engine? put a placard on it limiting the rpm? Modify the carb (use a leftover nascar restrictor plate)? And what prevents the operator from running it at rated horsepower? Engine horsepower is determined by the manufacturer and listed on the type certificate, changing it would require a new type certificate (STC).

I am not saying this can't be done, I just don't think you will get the FAA to sign off on it. The process our organization went through to get a one time STC for an O-200 installation was extensive. And that was 15 years ago, not sure what the repeatability potential would be now.

If you can get the Harer STC and upgrade to the C85 that would be the most doable option since it is already approved and wouldn't require any hoop jumping. Do the mods, A&P fills out the 337, IA approves the 337 and it gets sent to Oklahoma. One complication may be the availability at present of the Harer STC. If not available now, it should be in the future.

Shoot...there's 70+ lbs difference between an O-200 and an O-235....Power to Weight Ratio is a big consideration.

                  Re: Engine upgrade

I'd rather run a C-90/0-200 because you can run longer props, and probably cost less than upgrading a C-85.

well ya but i could also go and use the stc to up it to a 125hp too

                      Re: Engine upgrade

Since some of you are talking about experimental installations, STC's and approved/unapproved mods...

How much does an O-235 with the starter, generator and magnetos removed weigh? As I posted previously, the Light Speed ignition system delivers improved reliability, higher available power, better economy, and one-finger starting. Compare this hand start stripped 125 horse motor to the weight of a stock O-200 or C-90 with the heavy stock starter and generator and magnetos.
