  • Landing gear rubber bumper help

I have a set of the H3 “Official” taylorcraft landing gear bumpers from Ace aircraft supply. I have searched all the threads but cannot find any information on what Mods need to be made3 to these bumpers so that Landing gear is in the proper position when the shock cords hold the gear completely up. I have a partial piece of what I think is an original bumper but I am not sure. Hear what I I need to know.

    1. How thick should the rubber be between the gear leg and the fuselage where the bumper is attached? The H3 handle guard is way to thick and must be trimmed. I just don’t know how much>
    2. should the sides of the H3 be trimmed thinner than they come from the package. It appears that even on my original which was very thin there are marks where the shock cords rubbed.

Any info on this would be appreciated. I am working very hard to fly this thing this summer before I get to old to fly it.

    Thanks

I assume you mean HS-3? (see attached photo)

When I installed these (on my wheelbarrow of course), I needed two of them, one for each side, because the thin flanks of the bumper need to be trimmed more than half-way up the flank. I didn't trim the flanks...there is very little bungee movement with the 1110's.

Anyway, I trimmed the curved portion to provide a nice flat for the gear to bump against. If memory serves, I guess the resulting thickness was about 5/8 inch. Almost impossible to tell from this photo, but that's what I recall.

Better to start off too thick...you can always trim a bit more off if the gear doesn't sit right.

Well our wheel borrow has not a test flight....er road test, yet but we did not trim the bottom as the rounded end gives kind of graduated stop to the bumper, getting thicker as it is compressed. But we used two too due to length. Larry
