I thought politics was supposed to be in the "Humor, Rants & Raves" section. This was a discussion about the future of Taylorcraft and keeping parts available to the many happy owners. I happen to think Hank's idea makes perfect sense, especially when you consider the current bad economy. We're not trying to be like the big Corporate giants.

I'm not much on dreaming. As was said in the Air Force, wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which fills up first. I'm not the least bit "angry". As for politics, politics is in every phase of our existence, from the factory floor to the sales office, to top management. Its all political. Personally, unless I was a DuPont or a Warren Buffett type, doing it for fun, I would never consider building light aircraft in the U.S. Too many have tried and failed, some under optimum conditions. Too many regulations that don't make sense, etc. If I did give it a shot, well capitalized and good people paid a good wage for what they know, I would have it centralized in one place. Much easier to keep track of the production and the cash flow. Not long ago (speaking of dreamers) I think a group tried to market the basic Aeronca Champ for around 80-90,000.00! The first 85hp Champ I flew in 1954-55, cost 1,700.00, almost new. How you get from there to the price of a 2009- 911 Porsche Carrera (used) is beyond me. For that kind of dough you can buy a NICE used super cub or Husky and really get with it! The only aircraft manufactuers that remain successful today in the U.S., with very few exceptions are those with "Govmint" contracts. But...if you manage to set up cottage industrys to make T-Craft parts which are approved, at a decent price I think you would be made dean of Harvard Business School. JC

Hi Hank, it's Brie. I just came over here after reading your reply to me on the Moto-Air Yahoo group.
I think that instead of an experimental powered by a 100 horse motor, how about a lightweight, single seat 4130 fuselage, and lightweight aluminum tubing ladder style wings, all skinned in 1.8 ounce fabric.
There are several two cylinder four stroke engines making mid thirties power, capable of direct driving a two bladed prop, and weighing LESS than 80 pounds.
Ultralights are the only segment of aviation that is GROWING, even now. Give me your thoughts guys. Brie

hey brie thats only because the ultralight segment have far less rules and can get away with more too i have the plans to an affordalane and it still looks like a plane but it dont fly fast i plan to build it some day just for some really cheap fun

COOL Jim.
I designed a full scale, ultralight legal replica of a
1930 Aeronca C-2 that is about ten days to two weeks
from first flight. It is part 103 weight legal, and I will
be flying it up to Alliance in July instead of the
Taylorcraft which still needs it's lift struts, and now a new
annual before it can fly legally.
There is a group of us that have no intention of building
aircraft, or even kits, but will sell plans after I get about
100 hours on mine. Two other members of our little group
Are each nearing completion of their replicas, and one of
them may accompany me to alliance with his plane.
We had plan to start on designing a single seat
U/L legal replica of the L-2 as soon as we are done
testing the C-2. I'll see you guys in July. Brie

Guess I should have let you know my old company name is what I used on Yahoo. Aeroapplications was the name of my old company. Did some engineering consulting. No money in it (for the stuff I liked to do) but a lot of fun.

Welcome to the ManuSina design
discussion group. Every once in a
while we will put our feet up on the
table and just BS back and forth for
8 or 10 posts, then I will get us all
back to task.
One of our members who just loves
to trade around for stuff just accuired
a P&W 3350 on it's own dedicated
transport trailer. When we asked
Him what he planned to do with
THAT, he replied that it would make
a GREAT lawnmower for the runway.

Lots of dreaming going on here.... Pretty soon the $100,000 T-craft/Cessna 185 will be parked in the hangar and the owner will be out flying the rickety vintage BC-12D to get back to the roots of aviation. We have a hangar full of planes but I like the T-craft for what it is. If I need something that will work in other situations I use one of the "others". There are so many choices of planes out there to fit every niche and not too many can fill a lot of the cubby holes. The T-craft is cheap, simple and fun. It doesn't make a good cargo plane or interstate commuter but it is cheap, simple and fun. go flyin!

I love my Taylorcraft as much as I do BECAUSE it is "old" (read
EMP blast proof) technology that works the same, all the time,
and seperates the PILOTS from the wannabess because it
takes an IRON pilot to fly this fabric bird cross country then
Slip it in on a crosswind approach. If I did anything, it would
be to make an ultralight replica, so that it's owner could fly
cheaper, without multiple thousand dollar AD's that have to
be installed by A&P's. Brie

well you got a point there i think i could rebuild it as an experimental my dad and i have to replace about 30% of the fuse and were rebuilding the whole plane so i could make that 51% maybe i mean look at the swick t its now a kit

huh ill have to talk it over with the old man and see what he thinks
