John Wolf did mine. I sent him the box of parts that I was given when I bought the plane, and asked him to replace the cap tube, etc. He called to verify that it was going on a '41 Taylorcraft. I said that it was, and he said that he would fix me up, but the parts that I had sent him were from a '41 Buick. He essentially built me a new unit from scratch. I guess that at some point, the original one was replaced with something handy.
Keystone sends their temp bulb repairs to John Wolf. However, John Wolf & Co. will not provide any 8130/yellow tag or FAA paperwork with their repairs if you send the instrument directly to them.
Keystone is an FAA repair station and has all the appropriate paperwork that goes along with the repairs. Some IA types are more particular about 8130/yellow tags than others. Might want to talk it over with your mechanic before you decide where to send it.
Keystone requires some babysitting if you want the repair done in a timely fashion. Give them a deadline. Tell them it's off a flying airplane. Call them to check on progress. Keep on 'em!
Rochester oil temperature gauges have matte-white dial with black bezel. Mount in 2-1/16" dia. hole. New manufacture. Furnished with one 5/8-18UNF X 5/8-18UNF adapter nut. Available in the following temperature ranges and capillary lengths. 48" of capillary cost 76.25.
Keystone did mine when it was damaged due to the wrong brass adapter being fitted to oil screen. Adapter had a chamfer seat surface not flat.
They also refurbished the Taylorcraft logo on dial face.
As I remember it did take a little time but I was also getting mags redone at same time.
Can't find the Rochester at Aircraft Spruce this evening but I do see the
AVOX. I have many oil changes without breaking the tube. The current
set up has about 4 inches of flat spring type material at each end connected to the probe and the instrument. I will be calling John Wolf tomorrow.
Current Gauge is a US Gauge with the no. AD7390 on the face. Maybe I'll be able to get a Taylorcraft logo if they can fix mine for a reasonable amount.
Had a hard time getting my hands and a wrench behind the gauge to be able to unscrew it. I plan on glueing/jbweld the nuts to the mount to keep from putting my hands up there when I'm ready to install the old or new gauge.
Checked the fitting sizes and went with the Rochester. Max temp. is 250 so I need to get use to seeing the needle in a different position. I will hold onto the old one just in case I want to go back. I like the mounting set up over the Rochester. I'm back in the air and that the goal. Need to make it to Los Banos one day..
