  • Two part Exhaust.

I am planing to use the two piece exhaust from Sonny Porch in FL. I am concerned about a exhaust co2 leak where the two sides join. They use a special clamp with a pin in it but it apears to me that it could still leak. If anyone has experience with this system any coments or help would b appreciated. If all else fails it can become a one piece system.

I saw that exhaust system and it is very nice too. What about calling him
and seeing if he could weld it one piece ? It seems like there would be a problem with carbon monoxide too.

A dab of RED rtv and it is ok. There are several aircraft with slip fit exhaust that use a clamp that has a pin to keep the exhause from sliding but is not strong enough to clamp the pipes together. Tim

It's relatively easy... all you have to do is hook up the sliding / joiner portion of the Poarch exhaust system up to the CARBURETOR heat part of the system. This way any monoxide leak will go to the carburetor and not the cabin. The engine will still run well enough.

Then you hook up the one-piece SOLID side of the exhaust to the cabin heat valve.

(this will require a bit more SCAT tubing and ducting under the engine)

This is STILL not 100% safe, since a bad exhaust leak can travel across the little round divider under the heat muff. So while it is all apart you have to make sure that there is a good seal between the round divider and the inside of the heat muff. I believe the automotive exhaust header builders have some sort of high temp sealing paste that withstands the heat. It is tempting to use this paste to seal the sliding joint but you cannot take that risk on an airplane.

Lastly you install a battery powered LOUD electric monoxide monitor in the cabin and make DAMN sure the batteries are always good.

If you live in a warmer climate, disable the cabin heater, (just do not hook up the SCAT duct to the heat valve) and wear longjohns when it's cool. That will buy you 100% safety if the weather allows.

All that being said, there are several other choices that may be worth looking into, such as the Cessna 150 system, and one of the Luscombe systems. Those are two piece, and reportedly make much more heat when you need it.

Sonny Porch did one for a guy that looks exactly like me on a plane that looks exactly like mine........it works great, no exhaust issues at all. Send him your old one if you can, then he can match them up (almost) perfectly.

If you decide to run the Aeronca Hanlon Wilson exhaust, I have the molds for the farings for the short mount cowling. You have to cut the cowling out about 4"x4" to clear the exhaust. Tim
