  • push to talk and a the new guy

I am adding a radio and wanting to know where you may have installed ptt. i am looking for a permanent as i dont like all of the cords etc. if you have some pictures of your install it would be great.

A bit about me the new guy. I can't thank you guys enough for the support i have received in my questions. I am young pretty young at 28 finishing school in an aviation degree went through the first time and obtained mech eng. I started flying about 8 years ago. Two years ago I found a taylorcraft but couldn't swing the deal on my on. I talked the flight school into buying it. I then took two years off flying. The plane had a rough landing and broke the right gear. the owner wanted out and i could now afford it. I found an A/P he watched me sew patch and replace the gear. I performed an owner assist annual and have now flown about 5.5 and just got my tw endorsement last night. The old radio and the transponder was bad. I fixed the transponder the radio was on the fcc list. Since then i was able to tune in the compass get both shinn brakes to work at full run up. fixed a ton of air leaks in the cabin and can comfortably fly at 35 degrees with heat on. this week I have a few more holes to track down I found out the last guy didn't hit all of the screw plates when attaching the trim outside forward of the doors around the windshield. this week looks like i will add a radio and intercom to replace the old. she isn't beautiful yet but getting there.

Ick too many instruments. You might get lost with your head in the cockpit sooooo much!

Looks good except for the ice. Just keep at it. You wont have fun being miserable until you have to recover her.
I didnt do a permenant installation for the PTT, it was just one more solder joint to break when you least expect it. Tim

I just read an artical in Sport Aviation about hard mounting radios. Go to their site and do a search or if you can not find it let me know I will see which issue it was. But the gist of it was becareful, lots of laws, certifacations, and just plain comman sense apply. Fire, G-loads on part of the plane that were not designed for it, etc. Other wise; glad to see someone like you getting in to tail draggers! Larry

          Eric,

Kudos to you and others like you who identify what they want in life and take the neccessary steps to go after it. I used to tell my daugther that the difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. Dreaming is easy, and is always the first step in any goal. But without a plan, any goal will always just be a dream.

As far as where to mount a PTT switch forgive me for stating the obvious, but I have seen people who forget the purpose of having one. The whole idea is to be able to fly the aircraft with one hand, and still talk on the radio while using your other hand to adjust the engine controls, or whatever else needs doing. So from your excellent pictures, my suggestion would be to mount the PTT switch on the narrow portion of your control wheel that forms the left side of the little triangular cutout. Or in other words, about where your left thumb would comfortably rest if extented.
