  • 337 required for Recover?

I have found a BC 12D 85 For Sale that was completely restored and recoverd in 2004. This is well documented in the aircraft logs

The paperwork is complete all the way back to when the aircraft was new except for the 337 for the Stits recovering is missing.

A CD history of the aircraft has been received from the FAA database and they did not have a copy either.

The person that owns the aircraft is attempting to contact the AP that did the work. Hopefully, he'll "find" a copy.

If the 337 can not be found, what if anything can be done so the aircraft paperwork is airworthy?

    Thanks

    Craig,
You can have the FAA come out and do a Conformity inspection for the covering. They don't sign off the work performed, only that it conforms to the STC. If you have the log entry that outlines the work that could be enough to satisfy who is concerned.

Have the current owner hire an IA to inspect and issue an 337 for the undocumented work as a condition of the sale.

It's standard practice for IA's and it lands the problem right in the lap of the seller where you want it.

p.s. standard practice does not mean frequent practice

Sounds like a perfect job for a consultant DAR. Have the seller get it done, either by an IA or a DAR, as a condition of the sale.

The easiest way, as mentioned before, is for the guy who did the covering to "find" the missing 337 form and send it in with an apology for misplacing it.

DAR? HuH? I would just get a IA and that puts the buck into the IA, even if the A&P finds the lost 337, if he or she is not a IA, then it still needs to be singned off on the 337 by an IA. Tim

            Craig,
An IA can do the job, but it might be hard to find one that will do the job. I have made some 337's for things like Brackett air filters and other minor items, but I don't believe I would fill one out for a cover job I had no supervision over. That's starting to wax a whole different breed of cat.
Everybody could have done things correctly and the FAA has misplaced the form. Check with your FSDO and ask their opinion of your options.
I wouldn't consider this a deal breaker, but I would work him on the price due to the paper problem.
