Has anyone installed a an aftermarket landing light on a bc 12. something similar to duckworth or leading edge from spruce. Where might i find the hard parts listed for the piper or taylorcraft version mentioned in other post here.

    Thank You
    Eric

Side note If you have seen my previous post the sewing and patching is done. I have replaced the gear and bungees on the affected side, performed an assisted annual flown about 4 hours dual and almost finished with the endorsement. I am pretty sold this is the best plane i have flown, i dont think you could have more fun than touch and goes near dusk in a tcraft on a grass field

I was going to ask why you're thinking about a landing light installation unless you're doing some instruction/commercial ops, but then I read the rest of your post. Sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day!!

Glad you're enjoying your ship! I heartily agree. Taylorcrafting is tonic for the soul.

I guess this means you found that elusive cotter pin hole. Or did you end up just drilling a new one?

sneaky sob that cotter pin hole. hidden by the grease and a bit different orientation. did an owner assisted annual learned alot and now have a really long list of fun stuff to add or fix.

          Eric,

I have come to the conclusion that if I don't "discover" something I didn't know about my plane, I haven't done a very good annual. Every annual done on my plane for the last 11 years has been "owner assisted". I know my plane better than any AI. I have even surprised a couple of them by insisting on inspecting a few things better than they wanted. But I always figure it is my butt strapped into the thing, not theirs.

Have you located all the drain holes and lubricating points on your landing gear? Most of them have been painted over.

When you "discover" something on your plane, share it with us. It may be something some of us haven't discovered yet.

I duplicated a piper one and installed it in the taylorcraft listed in the tech references section, you can make all of the parts if you have a cub to look at for comparison. Look at the 337 for how to install it. Tim

here are some drawings to get you started. I based my drawings on a single bulb version of these....

Interesting website! For those of you who don't have one there is an online copy of AC4313 on this website. It is about halfway down the page on the left side.

                    Re: landing light install

My F22A eats landing lights as a hobby! today I replaced yet another and at the same replaced both so that the filament is in the vertical position as opposed to the horizontal! It was suggested on the forum that this move gives X3 life as the filament is subject to far less flex particularly when landing? makes sense in a funny sort of way - will report back with results.

Why do you even turn it on? Do you fly at night much? Tim

                        Re: landing light install

Some folks use a "keep warm" circuit that puts a small warming voltage on the filament. You might look at that idea and see if minimizing thermal shock might be a solution. This is especially popular in the experimental world, but I think it might be done on a T-craft using a ramp-up voltage circuit when turning on the lamp.

                          Tim,

Here in the UK we tend to always use the landing lights on finals in day time to give better visibility to Air Traffic Controllers and also to other aircraft. We tend to use them sometimes as well in a busy poor viz traffic pattern. I was just taught that way and always stick with it but it doe's vary where you do your flying. It is just considered as a safety thing and in the area in which I fly the millitary do a lot of flying ( Tornado's & Hurcules ) so I switch them on if they are about as they often fly through our airport low level as apparently it is akin to third world with defunct nav aids etc!

On the question of power surge it is very easy to blow the landing lights if you start up with them in the "on" position as I found out to my cost soon after I first had the aircraft! probably saved me blowing the avionics at some stage though cos I never left anything switched on since!

Has anyone installed a landing light that is an new efficient LED type like the Aveo or similar? I would like to get an LED landing light on my BC12D.

                              Re: landing light install

We installed one on our Cessna 172 Skyhawk and it puts out more light than the sealed beam it replaced. Also it only draws 3.0 amps and the old one consumed 18.0 amps. I leave it on all the time when flying as it increases our visibility to other pilots, when taxing towards other planes durning the day other pilots tell me it is blinding them. I like it.
