Comm radios do not need to be TSO'd for part 91 operations.

Can you educate me with a source for that information? This could be very useful to me right now.

With regard to brackets made for holding a handheld com radio or GPS, do regulations dictate how those may be constructed or attached to the instument panel or glareshield?

If its velcro, its legal as a temp installation, if its screwed then it is structural and requires a 337, the exception seems to be an air gismo for the garmins. Some say they require a 337 others say no in the FSDO. If in doubt ask your IA, they are signing off the annual. Tim

I have a clamp that fits on the yoke. Easily removeable. One thing I
like about it is the ability to use the push to talk switch on the radio
without having to run extra cords. I can push it in with my thumb while still flying the Taylorcraft.

You mean you want me to show you were it isn't stated that they are required? Hard to do.

The KX 170B is not TSO'd and is found in hundreds (thousands?) (formerly probably hundreds of thousands) of part 91 planes. The same radio was also available as a TSO'd radio under a different number (KX-175B, IIRC).

Part 91 calls out TSO's for altitude encoders, transponders, ELT's, Terrain awareness and warning systems, flight data recorders, flight data recorder altitude reporting equipment, TCAS II, and cockpit voice recorders. Comm radios are not mentioned.

                    Re: radio suggestions

Russ Hardy, who rebuilt my T-craft did this on his own, (which is identical) He bent a piece of sheet metal just so, Rounded the corners carefully, painted it the color of the interior and screwed it into the existing holes at the top of the pilots door. With door closed only half of the piece shows and to it is screwed his icom radio holder. Looks very good and puts radio RIGHT at his left hand! (near the top of the vertical door, you can size this up.)JC
