  • radio suggestions

Well I'm looking to add a radio to the plane. I have a EDO553 I believe. and not functioning. I have a handheld but would prefer to have intercom and panel mount. I have a garmin 196 as well. So my question is what is an economic solution for a used radio and intercom with audio in?

I installed a microair. Small & light, panel mounts in 2.25" instrument hole. TSOd, voice activated intercom. Not cheap but I'm happy with it. Fred

I have a micro air installed on the left side where the map case used to be, thier prices have gone up since I bought mine but there is a 337 of the install in the tech references section. Tim

I'm planning to use the MicroAir com and transponder. They work well, are light, and have an integrated intercom for simplicity. I'm mounting them (along with CB's and switches) in the left hand glove box behind a fake, removable door. with the door installed, its almost impossible to know they are there.
The com antenna is going inside the fuselage behind the baggage. Only the transponder antenna will be visible on the belly.

            Hello

I have also been looking at radio choices. There seem to be several light weight choices among those popular in gliders. Such as MicroAir, Becker, Xcom.

I have a couple questions though.
Is there going to be a cooling problem When installing them in the glove
box and is he glove box "deep" enough?

What are you going to use to electrical power? A gel type battery? If so
where and how will be be mounted? What approval process will be needed,
            337?

              Re: radio suggestions

I am not mounting "in the glove box", I'll be mounting where the glove box normally is. So, looking under the panel, you'll be able to see the back of the radios like most GA aircraft.

I'm also installing a C-85-12 and full electrical system as part of my restoration. Using a PMA'd Odyssey battery p/n SBS J-16. (STC'd in the Supercubs)

Look at the 337 in the tech reference section, it may answer some of your questions. The Micro air does not use enough power to have heat issues by itself, unless you are in the Gobi....

                    Re: radio suggestions

Dont mount the com antenna inside, you can get shitty reception and when you transmit, you can increase the amount of radiation you receive since you will be 3 feet from it with no ground plane to insulate you. Just a though. Tim

Yes, its possible, use the same information that is on the 337 from the tech resources page, my micro air was not TSOd when I installed it. If it is certified from another country we may have a bilateral agreement that might be enough for approval for installation. Contact flightline and see if they have the emi output ratings and if they are willing to give them to you. That will also be supproting data. Tim
