  • Old Idea New Again

Has anyone noticed a shared unusual trait between one of the oldest light planes (1940 T-craft) and the newest (SkyCatcher)? Reported as newly invented and awaiting patent. The inventor's last name is Taylor.... is there a connection? We'll see who guesses first.

hint: page 97 in Chet Peeks' wonderful 'The Taylorcraft Story' and the Skycatcher article in the Jan. AOPA mag.

Come on, stop working and get on this! h

Yes it was noticed and Alton Marsh has quite gracefully received an e-mail complete with a picture from my Dad showing that Taylorcraft did beat Cessna by about 70 years...

I wonder if any 2010 Sky Catchers will be flying in 2080?

It didn't work to well back then, I hope Cessna's version works better. If it doesn't it will be just another straw for the Skycatcher (camel) to carry. Tom

          Re: Old Idea New Again

I'm sincerely sorry to appear racist, or overly conservative, or too much of a flag-waver, or not enough in support of "globalization", or not politically correct enough.

My considered opinion on the Skycatcher is ... Buy American instead.

Shame on them for outsourcing it. I know it's "not that simple" when you get into global economics, but sometimes things are more simple than you are led to believe. I've owned foreign-made airplanes and American airplanes. If you are fly sailplanes at the competition level, you need a German built airplane because they make better airplanes for that and America cannot.

But if Cessna is making an airplane cheaper overseas, and selling it for a bigger profit because they are giving the Chinese the money to build it, then that's wrong. If there was no way to build an American airplane to compete with the Chinese price (like in the alarm clock market), than that's one thing. If Cessna offered the Skycatcher for $59,999 and an American airplane was $100,000, then there is at least some incentive to buy Chinese. But at anywhere near the going rate, I would say that it is more important to keep our money here.

          Sorry for the thread hijack.

Bill i agree with you. I beleive our own politicians are selling us out to China, or there would be so much tax on imports that our American companies would have things made in U.S.A. in order to sell cheap. Marv

They're traitors both the poiticians and corporate leaders.

Soon Americans be begging for scraps and dodging shariah law.

My son told me that last week on the white house website there was an article about Obama signed an executive order that allowed interpol free and direct access to work in our country rather than to work thru the FBI with FBI permission. Bad news if correct.

As an owner of an manufacturing business based right here in the good old USA I can't agree more, however, have you guys considered what content of the airplane is American made??? Oh I suppose that radio may not be made here, or that engine? or that propeller or the guys that reassemble the thing here in the USA? Maybe I'm wrong??

Its a shame whats happened. NAFTA was sold to us by the politicians saying "NAFTA will create MORE jobs!" This was a lie and they knew it. They were pandering to the lobbyists who pay them big bucks. Now these same weasels are saying "We need more jobs!. Personally I wont go into a Walmart. They dont pay their people correctly and the Walmart family children are ALL billionaires. The small American businessman is under great pressure and its all because of GREED! TERM LIMITS will help solve this! JC

                    Hi Jim,

I have to offer one dissent although I whole heartidly agree with you on all else. I stay clear of Walmart too they are driving our jobs overseas. (btw - My wife read the book about Sam Walton and describes him as a mean spirited person.)

Anyhow my dissent is this; term limits will not help, we just need to vote the weasels out but if the American people will not rise to that task then we get the government that we deserve.

I believe that we used the same reasoning with the German population and Adolf, and that required more than a mere vote at the poll.

I thought it was interesting that after nearly 100 years aviation experience, Cessna (1) designed a plane with a major flat spin problem (2) had trouble getting the gross weight under 1320 lbs. and (3) had to produce the thing in China. Pathetic. But at least, somewhere, old C.G. Taylor is having a good laugh.
