  • Any use the Stewarts System?

Sometime in the next couple of weeks I will begin recovering my BC12. I'm interested in trying the water borne Stewarts System but haven't found anyone that's used it yet. Not real surprising though, as I only personally know of 1 other guy that has used poly fiber and 1 that has used superflite.

Sure would appreciate any input from anyone that knows anything about it.

I just am finishing a pair of PA-15 wings, ailerons and rudder. I have used all the other processes other than Razorback.
    Advantages:
I did this in my attached garage and still enjoy my happy home. (no smell)
My 14 year old son helped and I didn't expose him to any bad chemicals.
    Nice DVD set of instructions
    Good technical support
    Light weight
    Disadvantges:
Plan on 30% more material than recommended
HVLP gun with big compressor needed, no air turbine
HVLP gun MUST have the correct cap and needle
It's all I'll use from now on, Killed to many brain cells with all that other stuff.

      Great info Dave, thanks.
I do have a good HVLP gun and a good compressor that has no trouble keeping up with it.
What size tip and needle do prefer?

How would you compare the ease of spraying compared to poly-tone paint?

      Thanks again..

        Aaron,
I have used nothing but Stewart's for about 5 yrs now and will never use anything else for all the reasons Dave cited. I am using a Devilbis Finishline 3 gun with a 1.3 tip and a 13cu.ft./min. compressor. Pretty much what Dan Stewart recommended.
Where are you located. I am in Dundee,NY. Happy to show you aircraft painted with it if you are nearby. Larry Huntley

Been using it since about '98. It's better than anything out there, and I've tried most of them. It's NOT harder to use than any of the others...just different, and alot of people have a hard time with that.

Been thinking of trying it on my next airplane too- you guys mention the HVLP requirements. . . I have a Citation 4 stage HVLP (with forced air respirator) I use for spraying aerothane and ranthane. Will that setup be ok for the Stweart system? I like using it because of the simplicity.

I made the mistake of breathing a little ranthane and kept a bad cough for more than 3 weeks. . . . . .never again.

                Eric,
Call out there and ask them.... I know I've seen it sprayed with a turbine before with good results, but it took a bit of extra preparation. Heat was the enemy in that case.

Fred Sutliff just finished re-painting the red on his 150 outside with a Harbor Freight HVLP gun & Stewart Systems paint. He said the stuff is just about impossible to sand-- really hard stuff! Sure is shiny and it sure is RED!

                        Thanks for all the responses.

The color samples and videos showed up from Stewarts!

I have decided to go with this system due to all the great feedback here, but haven't picked a color yet.

                          Aaron,
What year and model do you have? Any clues on what the original colors or layout were?
Some of the original color schemes were REALLY nice and we may be able to find some pictures of what your plane looked like from the factory.

It's a 1941 model. I don't have any idea what the original scheme was as it was recovered and painted in '94. Then the hangar fell on it.

We have decided to go with Daytona white for the main color, then metalic blue for the trim. The metalic blue does a good job of matching the interior which was all redone new in '94. The plane only got another 25hrs after the restore before the hangar fell, so the interior is in great shape.

The metalic blue Taylorcraft used in 41 is still available as Nieuport Blue and I think is is a Cessna color. My 45 is Nieuport Blue and Taylorcraft Ivory. I have a model of my 45 that was done in Diana Cream (back when Randolf SWORE Diana Cream was Taylorcraft Ivory, it isn't) and Nieuport Blue. It is a really pretty color! I have all the color layouts used in 41 on the "Deluxe" models with the subtle differences I have found in old photos. It is a really pretty plane in white and blue. Send me an email address and I will try and send some photos.
