  • Newbie here

Hello to all! This is my first post on this forum.

I am part of a group of volunteers who restore vintage civilian and military aircraft. Our current project is a taylorcraft bc 12. We dragged it out of the weeds and overgrowth and back to our shop. The prior owner has not found the documentation nor his log books. There was no fabric on the frame. We did not find an "n" number. There were no tags nor stampings. We know that it is early because it has a 50 hp. Continental and the aeronca cowl. I would appreciate any help that anyone could provide to help me narrow done
    thank-you,
    frank

Hi Frank, Welcome to the Tribe!

Use the search function up top and put in "serial number location" you'll get a few threads discussing where the sn's are stamped into the frame. Sounds like a cool project. I'll bet it's a 1938 or '39. Keep us informed on what you find. Pics would be great. Howard

It would be worthwhile for the group to purchase a copy of Chet Peek's book, "The Taylorcraft Story" which will be valuable to looking up items for the restoration.

That is a good find and always nice to have another Taylorcraft restored and flying. What is the N number? My dad got his private license in a
Taylorcraft with a 50 hp Cont. NC 22654. In January of 1941 he flew it from Iowa to Miami and back, 43.5 hours r/t.

If the wheels and instrument panel are still there we can reduce teh size of teh search. Are the wheels round" Is there a large single instrument in the middle of the panel? How about the doors? Wood? Tube? sheet metal? Count the number of hinges on the rudder too.
You will find that with a few pictures some of us will be able to get you other places to look for serial numbers. I have yet to see a Taylorcraft that we couldn't identify.
This is what makes a group fun. Resurrecting another Taylorcraft from the grave.

If you have the prior owner's name, you should be able to look it up on the faa.gov website. It will have N number and serial number.

Good evening Howard, Carl, Hank and Pearson!

Thank-you for the welcome and for your assistance. I will try the search function help after I have responded to these replies.
I will track down the answers to the numerous questions when we meet this Saturday. I do not trust my memory. I am going to obtain the Chet Peek book to familiarize myself with the entire Taylorcraft story. I have read through this forum and would like as much information as possible about the process, the man and his aircraft.
            Again, Thank-you!!
            Frank

Update: tracked down a copy of the Chet Peek book and it is in the hands of UPS as I write. Again, Thank-you!

The serial number is stamped on the top of the upper right hand door hinge. Good luck. I am just starting a '40 basket BC-65 (NC27451).

Thank-you for your help!!! Today was a bonanza. We found a serial number on the top right hinge (1020). We matched it with an "n" number: 212230.

we went to allaince memory and matched it with 212231 and saw a lot of great pictures and data on that sight. Thank-you again for your help!!!

We found a serial number on the upper right door hinge. We matched it with an n number 21230. I went searching and found that the number has been re-issued to a cessna in the state of Oregon.

there are 3 hinges on the vertical fin post. The wheels are not round. They are the pretzel shaped wheels. The door is tube. There is a large single instrument in the middle of the panel. We went to alliance memories and matched it with 21231. We found lots of pictures that have provided insight into what we have. All in all, it has been a great day!!!

I have pressured a co-worker to join Taylorcraft Forum. he goes by JRD. He has forgotten more about than I will know. I am grateful for all that everyone on this forum has provided to this point!
