  • Harer STC sump part #

Can anyone look at the Harer STC drawings and let me know what part number C-85 oil sump is used? Short neck? Long neck? right or left side?

Does anyone have the drawings I can use or make copies of so I can make progress on my project until the STC is available again?

Forrest- I believe i'm on the list for the STC, any idea what the time frame is 'till it's available again?

    Thanks,
    Bob

    Hi Bob,

I looked in my drawings (I purchased the stc about 3 years ago) and I see no mention of the oil sump anywhere. It is not specified on the engine installation drawing.

      Thanks Dave.

Does the picture on the Engine install drawing show the sump at all? does it look like a long neck on the right side similar to the A-65?

      Thanks,

Why does it matter which sump is shown on the drawing? I'm fairly sure it will not have much of an effect on the STC installation.

While I’m sitting here twiddling my thumbs, waiting for the STC and drawings to become available, I thought I would get the engine ready. I have a bad sump on my C-85 and would like to find the CORRECT sump that was used on the original BC12D-85 or what is listed on the Harer STC paperwork......

Since it doesn’t seem to be listed on the Harer drawing, Can anyone who has a C-85 powered taylorcraft let me know where there sump filler neck is? Please?

I would hate to get one that is on the wrong side, and end up interfering with other items and have to buy another.

            Does this make sense?

            Thanks,

You may want to check BEFORE u buy.

We have a "Harer" (BC-12D) conversion here with a 90 hp.

It also incorporates a C-150 exhaust system.

All was done long ago via 337.

It appears the sump is either a left or reversed unit.

In either case it is short.

Otherwise it is impossible to remove dipstick as it hits exhaust.

Is it possible to remove the oil sump and reinstall 180 degrees, so the oil neck is on the right?

Re: Harer STC sump part #

There is at least 1 that will reverse. Looks like it may have been reworked.

When filler is turned to the right the C-150 exhaust interferes with

                        dipstick removal.

Re: Harer STC sump part #

Forrest I suggest writing a letter to the Harer family saying that the value of their STC (either as a donation to the Foundation, a sale, or a royalty agreement) is at it's very highest right now because it's the only game in town... but there are several people who are in a position to create a separate STC that fixes all the problems of the Harer STC, addresses all the things that have been changed since 1950, and if they wait for this to happen their STC will be virtually worthless by comparison.

Of course your letter would be more polite than my letter, but the basic point should be the same. It happens to be 100% true.

A new STC can be developed that would resolve all the errors and built-in paperwork and detail problems with the Harer STC, AND

                            1) push the gross to 1320 instead of 1500
                            2) add the new lightweight starter and alternator on the short mount and short cowl,
                            3) add a medium size baggage compartment that doesn't mess with the balance much,
                            4) allow a better 2 piece exhaust system,
                            6) do the basic known structural mods that matter (wing fittings and such),
                            6) have a choice of 1 or 2 wing tanks,

and it would be a huge winner for the future of the Taylorcraft airplane.

If someone else doesn't want to do it, I would do it myself after I have some amount of success with my current STC project and can pay the rent for a while.
