Can not help you on rivits. I reused most of the marten wire when I recover. I did order some new and found it unsatisfaftory as it is not the same bends as on the original. The new wire does not seat well. I do not know if the factory has the old style wire available or not.? If you have trouble compare the old and the new and change sources if you can and want to go lthis route.
The main problem with the "new" wire (marketed as Martin Wire) is that the barb pitch is different. If going this route, then it is worth purchasing the "fixing kit" for about $15 which has a drilling jig for the different hole pitch. OK, this means drilling a complete new set of holes in the rib caps, but it is the "approved" attachment method, and it saves re-bending the new wires to fit the old holes.
From a purely engineering perspective, I can see nothing untoward about using 1/8 fabric rivets. Murphy Aircraft use this for their fabric-covered aircraft (OK, I know they are homebuilts and therefore "Exp".) [Thinks: did Aeronca use this as original equipment?]
The load-carrying capacity of these proper fabric rivets is surely greater than the wires, but then they would have to carry the weight of all that extra paperwork.
Bob, we are undergoing approval here in the UK to rivet one of our "Experimental-equivalent" BC12D Taylorcrafts, and if agreed, we may have some paperwork to demonstrate some kind of "approval", but whether the FAA would accept it as "approved data" is another matter, and even here it may take us some time.
The Factory are going for rib stitching on the new F22's, yes, even on the stamped ribs, so Bob you may even be able to get approval to stitch the ribs on your older model. But don't hold your breath too long. And they certainly will not have Taylorcraft Wire to sell.
Still looking for a 337 to use fabric rivets for wing fabric attachment...can anyone help?
I know of a recent STC to use rivets for Cessna 120/140/170 series instead of the Cessna wire clip...I will be writing to the STC owner. I'll let you know. STC SA01814CH, issued 18 April 2003 "Replace Cessna S-43 fabric attachment clips with AD42ABSLF rivets"
At the factory tour this past weekend, Harry Ingram reported that Taylorcraft has type design approval to use RIB-STITCHING in lieu of the metal clips. He says that he can provide owners with approval paperwork...it is approved for all models.
So...theres another option for you.
If anyone needs the paperwork for using pop rivits to attach fabric to your Taylorcraft, post your private email address and I will send it to you in three attachments. They are to big to post onto this site.
You certainly have my permission. It would be wonderful if you could post a link to the 3 STC files. It will save me having to wait for this pokey dial up to up load them. That way Terry and others can just download them at their leisure.
