I didn't see the grey one, but the red one was fantastic.

And the Pietenpol did make it as far as a bean field near Momence, IL before the crankshaft broke:

It took six different airplanes, riding and flying, and a borrowed Chevy Tahoe, but I did make it to Oshkosh and back to VA.

It was good to bring old '23876 back to its birthplace in its 70th year-

Hon. Ambassador Rob Lees of Leicester, UK & George Bassett of South Bend, IN, who's restoring a 46 BC12-D s/n 8704. Rob gave George the equivalent of a Taylorcraft master class at my plane.

Rob Lees & Larry Haas of La Cygne, KS. Larry is holding a flawless heat muff half he stamped using a mold he recently made. We all want some. [email protected].

George Bassett's grandson, who sat bored for many hours at my plane while George took many photos and notes, in several visits over two days. It's gratifying to now be able to help other Taylorcraft restorers like George, as so many of you have helped me over the years.

Horace Collier of Oak Island, NC with his 46 BC12-D.

My angelic wife Beverly Westra, who spent four of her 24 hours at Oshkosh helping wax my plane for judging. Behind her, three planes over in row 122, is a tan and burgundy Cessna 140 flown in by Gary Snell of Dresden, ME, who also flies a 46 BC12-D and coincidentally sold me some Case mags a few years ago. I really enjoyed finally meeting and talking with him.

Robbie Robinson of Fond du Lac, WI, who graciously phoned me several times after I arrived at Oshkosh, offering any assistance since he was just 20 minutes away. What a nice guy.

We had a Lindy award winning C-140A stop in for fuel at KVTI yesterday on it's way home to LAX. Patroller version with the clear doors.... it was gorgeous!

Notes from the Thursday morning Taylorcraft forum at Oshkosh, emceed by Steve Krog of the Taylorcraft Owners Club:

Steve introduced Jim Miller of Aircraft Technical Support, who answered questions about fabrics and paints. He recommends Dawn dishwashing liquid for washing Poly-Tone.

Steve then introduced Bill Reed of Wag-Aero, who now has an AMOC for sealing vented struts. A set of four new Wag-Aero sealed struts would cost $2080; repairing four original vented struts would be $1100. They drill two borescope inspection holes, less than 1/4 inch diameter, on either side of the bolt tab at the bottom of the strut. If they see no corrosion flaking, they can apply an anticorrosion coating, weld shut the inspection holes, and seal the struts. People asked about performing that inspection before shipping vented struts to Wag-Aero, in case they don't pass. Bill stressed that the two holes must be less than 1/4 inch diameter, and said he'd post a diagram on their website showing where to drill them. Bill also mentioned that Wag-Aero still has eight of the older-style small rear struts.

Mike Lazarowicz generously gave away little plastic bags of sets of AN940-416 washers for the tail brace wires, tossing them into the audience as if tossing candy from a parade float. Thanks, Laz.

Steve introduced David Wenglarz, Wing's Metal Works (Custom Metal Shaping: Antique Auto, Antique Aircraft, Street Rods), San Pierre, IN. David is fabricating metal wheel pants, boot cowls, bottom cowls, instrument panels, etc. as owner-produced parts. 219-828-3835, [email protected].

Steve put out a request that people send the Taylorcraft Owners Club copies of Forms 337 and sources for odd parts. He explained that any 337s issued before October 1955 became part of the Type Certificate, and can therefore simplify approvals for similar modifications. He asked everyone to look in the FAA CD-ROM of paperwork for their planes for old 337s and field approvals, and mail them to him.

In response to a question, Steve said that thanks to people sending in copies, he has accumulated almost a complete archive of old Taylorcraft Owners Club newsletters. He has some college kids hired this summer to scan them and then produce searchable archive CD-ROMs for all the TOC members. In response to a complaint about too much Cub stuff in the Taylorcraft newsletter, he asked all of us to submit material that would interest or help other Taylorcraft owners.

In response to questions about Type Certificates and drawings, Steve said the Pima Air Museum holds the L-2 Type Certificate. He said the original Taylorcraft drawings in Florida would need about two years of re-drawing by engineers and draftsmen before the FAA would accept them for manufacturing use, which has stymied plans for a new Taylorcraft LSA.

More photos of Taylorcrafts at Oshkosh.

N595G is an experimental clip-wing aerobatic plane with a full-inverted Continental 90. Erik's prop card said he's seeking sponsors for the 2009 airshow season.

In the photo of Suzy's plane, note the foliage stuck in the wheel pants (there's a story there), the solar-powered party lights wrapped around the struts, the pink fuzzy dice hanging from the compass, and the usual inflatable green alien in the pilot's seat. And of course the "Well-behaved women seldom make history" T-shirt hanging on the prop. She does us proud.

Mark Hanna was parked near Suzy with his 40 BC-65 N24090. Didn't get a photo of him or the plane this year, but did check that my signature was still among the dozens of Taylorcraft pilot signatures on his fuselage and tail. He said he and his son are still having too much fun with it to recover it yet. He did have a snazzy new red and black checkerboard rudder, though, having retired the original rudder with Paul Tibbet's autograph that started the whole signatures on the fabric tradition.

I think I remember John Ricciotti asking about his odd extended dorsal fin, in the Thursday morning Taylorcraft forum. He's never seen another BC12-D with one like that. Other people questioned whether it might have been modified for operation on floats?

Russ and Susan Kaspar just recently bought their 1941 BC-65 from the town jeweler, who did a seven-year restoration and finally agreed they were worthy caretakers. He's flying it as a Sport Pilot, having done powered parachutes for many years.

The Piets from here are safe, Andrew King is home with his Taylorcraft. Wish we could have visited longer here. I am a bit busy getting ready for Mentone PRA Fly-In. . www.pra.org . Hope to arrange to get my Rotorcraft - Gyroplane Commercial & CFI .

Yea, Yea, grumble, grumble-piss and moan! I got to Osh at 4:30 Wed. only to find out the VAA dinner tickets sold out at 2pm!

Forrest is right! Always room at the Taylorcraft table, and we would have liked some more company too.

By the way Larry, it was nice to finally meet you at the Thursday forum, being that we don't live that far away.
