RE: 85 HP on a short mount. Anyone have details (photos?) on how to handle the cutout of the FRONT cowling on the left when installing Spark plug fairings. I was thinking that it would require some reinforcement to preclude weakening with possible cracking.
On the short mount 85 the front plug (can in this case) is about 3/4's under the edge of the front cowl; on mine at least.

I turned mine (can) down on my lathe so it would fit under the nose cowl, and also drilled a new hole for the safety wire. It didn't take much to make it clear.

I used rem37by plugs on top and didnt have to clearance any major areas of the cowl, only under the chaff tape a little. Tim

        Re: Spark Plug Bumps

It had been an issue on my last T-craft too, someone had hogged out the edge of the nose bowl with tin snips and cut the hole in the top cowl too close to the edge. It made the cowling fit poorly and was a minor eyesore. To prevent cracking the nose bowl I had to go in and hog it out a bit more with a rotary bit. Fortunately I could peel the chafe fabric away, smooth the cutout, and lay the chafe tape back down. The chafe tape rode against the top of the plug or harness (tall shielded plug).

If there is a shorter plug that will fit under there without trashing the cowl, I'd look into it. But remember the engine moves relative to the cowl, so a small clearance will possibly become no clearance once per revolution.

The aluminum cups and unshielded plugs will solve that problem, but create other problems in my limited personal experience.

Tim: with the BY's, do you use ignition wires with the right angle metal connector or what?
I haven't tried BY's for fit, but it sure would be nice if I could get a resistor plug in there.
I'll have to check around here if anyone has any, dead or otherwise, to try for fit before buying new ones.

I used just the wires that came with my new slicks, they were straight. The plug is about .45" shorter than a rem40e....Tim

How big do the bumps really need to be? I have seen some that are huge.
Is there are problem with both the front and rear plugs or only the front?

Remember when we are talking about the size of the bumps we are refering to the cowl bumps on airplanes and not something else. (;f

I think....I do not know for sure, that the shorter plugs will solve the problem without putting bumps in the cowl. I used them on my 85 champ as the wires were rubbing the cowl and they worked just fine. I THINK they were also hotter plugs which helped burn. JC

Thank you Pat. My best guess, without actually installing the BY's is that they will just make in the back and no way in the front. I'll get to it one of these days, but now I am just getting over an annual and doing the last steps of buying a house.

DC, I sent a buddy of mine out to Los Banos the other day in a Comanche to look for you. He was up there doing a commercial air conditioning job. I said to look for a T-craft on the field and to say hi for me... he said there was no airplanes on tiedown, no humans visible, and the entire airport looked like a complete ghost town!

He said he thought it must have had something to do with 110 degrees in the shade and nobody would be stupid enough to be sitting there frying like an egg...
