Re: tail wheel post how big is the opening?

You CAN tow behind your car. One of the guys here did it. Caused a bit of excitement with the local cops, burned the wheel bearings to a crisp, ruined at least one main wheel and generally turned out to be a REAL BAD IDEA. It works great for towing SLOW around the airport, but I wouldn't do it on public roads.

The plane that was towed was a Stearman. You think OUR wheels cost a lot!

I have done it with 2 Champs. Just city roads about 10 miles one way. Highway speeds would be a problem for sure.

How far will you be moving it? Somewhere I recall a discussion on how to do just that; I'll look in my collection - Mike

Have to move about 120k which is 72 miles . I am planning on loading it on a 18 ft flat trailer . The trailer is not quite wide enough so I was thinking about
using a piece of I beam to set the wheels in. I something is going to have to happen because I have to vacate the hanger and cottage by the 16th as it is all sold.
Talk about luck. I bought 23acres on a lake 12 minutes from my home and it
has a masssive hanger on the property. I almost bought the 185 that was in the hanger for 100K Canadian. Anyway this will be home to the little T in a couple of weeks. With 2400 square feet my little T is going to be very lonely.

When I moved my first Taylorcraft I used a converted boat trailer and put the mains on two 2x4s bolted across the back with a gap about 8" wide. I tied down the tires to the two 2x4s. The tail wheel was tied to the bow post at the front. If you try this make SURE you take the tail surfaces OFF and tie down the cowl and doors! If the air gets in the cowl it will open it right up and the doors will slam open so fast it will make your head spin (probably followed by the windshield blowing out!)
I made it about 15 miles on the highway with this rig, but when I moved my second Taylorcraft I rented an enclosed trailer. MUCH easier on the nerves!
            Hank

            P.S.
Obviously the wings were moved separately!

I just called a tow truck and they want 150 per hour, so since it's likely to
cost 450 ++ I gave up on that idea. Now I will check out a u hall they are not too bad for a days rental .

The truck I got just fit with the rudder, elevators and stab off as well as the prop. Kept me from having to go to the next size up truck and carried the whole plane (as well as a bunch of junk from the hangar). The fuse was in almost diagonal (fin tube all the way into the front side corner) with one wing under the front of the fuse and the other strapped to the side.
One trip, worked great. Wish I could remember which truck.

I did tow my tcraft once, about 25 miles, very slowly. First I pulled the wheels and greased the bearings and anywhere else I could get grease. Worked just fine, still using the wheels but did put in new bearings during the rebuild.

Uhaul is funny about anything with a gas tank. That is why I am not the owner of a Whitman Tailwind that was in Georgia.

We used an old car trailer to move a Luscombe. We took the wings and tail feathers off. Needed to make a small extention for the tailwheel which we put at the front of the trailer. My son can drive slower than me so he pulled the trailer.

Why would you tell U-Haul what you were moving? If they ask just tell tehm you are moving a bunch of stuff from a storage space.
                        It's true, kind of.

U-Hall has the perfect mover for my T called the transporter. I guess it's used for cars but is perfect for moving my T. It's a adjustable length car carrier that supports the front AND the rear wheels. Roll on roll off with ease
no ramps or hoists necessary. The rear would be held on a small stand where the rear wheels would normally go. At $30 a day this is a no brainer. My T is going for a ride on Saturday.

Looks similiar to what I have planned. How did you support the wings on the truck to protect from damage ?
