    Re: Passport

    I envy you. Some day...

You'll need a passport, yes. The EAA has some information about other new requirements you should look at here:

I went to Oklahoma City a couple of weeks ago for work on a UAL/Skywest regional flight. The guy setting next to me was a UAL captain that was on his way there to meet a buddy, and they were starting from there up to Alaska the next day in their personal airplane he told me. He was planning to avoid customs altogether by jumping from a planned stop in the Seattle area and on then to Ketchikan, AK, bypassing B.C. altogether. Of course they could do that. They're partners in a Cessna Caravan...

      Re: Passport

I know passports should not be needed between Canada and USA but we do now.
      And transponder.
Living in Niagara Peninsula is like living on dead end street, as flying goes, between the Great Lakes and US border, heading west is the only way to go now.
I heard from the friends what went to Sun and Fun what FAA (and the Canadian DOT) gives us all we dont want and nothing we need, all in name of securety. Yes you can get a no transponder permit but it takes time, money, and you have to be ON TIME.(and the passport ready.)
I gues FAA and customs have to protect us from our self and the the likes of 911 instigators.
Dont be afraid of us Canadians we have good food, good beer and are friendly. Once you passed the customs, just like in USA.

          Re: Passport

WOW, I guess i'm going to have to figure this all out. My cabin is on a lake that is part of Canada. I am also planning on jumping up into Manitoba some mornings and doing a little fishing on some of their great lakes. This probably isn't going to be as easy as I think?

            Cropduster:

Just bit the bullet and do it !. I will be far more rewarding than staying home and regreting later on.
I also tought it was going to be a nightmare. It was not. Just follow the instructions.
            In my case:
Got the passport and called in the border crossing airport (Watertown NY, in my case) and spoke with the agents. They told me what to do...show up on time !!, transponder, passport, address where I was going to go and where I was going to stay with phone numbers. I sent in all the info, including a copy of the passport. A day before the crossing, I called in my estimated window of arrival = one hour window. Got there about 10 minutes before the expiration of the window. The agents inspected the plane = 10 minutes, did the forms = 10 minutes, stamped the passport and filed a VFR plan to Kingstown Canada. Called in before departure and I was provied a swack code, by Watertown handed over from USA to Canada, landed at Kingstown, for about 15 minutes for their inspection, customs and forms and then cleared to go to Springbrook and Madoc Ontario. Same process on the way back.
My advise: call ahead and get familiar with the required forms , process and tell them your intentions. You can do the paperwork while they fill your Tcrft up and the agents do the visual inspection. I recall I paid a fee (security fee or ...?). Take a copy of your ownership documents for the plane, just in case;I did.

Call me or send me a PM if you want to talk about it and enjoy the trip

                Re: Passport

The rules all change beginning tomorrow, however if you cross into Canada on the water then you are a watercraft and not an airplane.

                    Re: Passport

Here is a link to the AOPA/COPA guide to cross border operations. This should answer all your questions. It is just under 5 meg.

                    Have fun.

You dont need the 406 yet, the Canadian Minsiter of Transportation refused to sign the legislation because there was no alterante method of Compliance. You will need a radio station liscense and at least 1 person onboard will need a radio operators liscense, bring duct tape for the 12 inch numbers if they complain, I did not need it. You will also need a transponder or you need the waiver. The waiver is a bitch...TSA is a royal pain in the ass....
