A65 Cylinder Replacement

Hey, we're just about to replace a cylinder on 43457 and I can't find anything about there being any kind of gasket or sealant around the base of the cylinder. I don't think there is, but I just want to make sure......engine experts?

There is an o-ring that goes underneath the base

Really? Do you have a part number or know a good source for it? There wasn't anything on the old one where it came off and I haven't been able to find anything like that listed anyplace, I'm probably not searching for the right thing.

The part number, which happens to be Continental p/n 21477, which happens to be in the A65 Overhaul Manual and Parts Catalog........................and you guys wonder why us old A&P/IA's are cranky!

A new one would come with a single cylinder overhaul gasket set that will need to be purchased

Call Norm at Premier Aircraft at Troutdale. You might also check with Columbia Aircraft. They surprise me all the time with the array of parts they have.

You will also need intake pipe gaskets and hoses, exhaust gaskets, push rod tube couplers, and rocker box gaskets. As Ragwing Nut pointed out, a single cylinder gasket set would be the way to go, and if you have a stock exhaust you will need the exhaust gaskets for all cylinders.
The dry valve lash (valve stem to rocker clearance with the lifter deflated) should be checked and if you're replacing the piston be aware that there are a couple of different pistons that are used in these engines and depending on the piston p/n, the piston pin could be either .922" dia or .859" diameter, which means the connecting rod might need to be rebushed if you change size. This is one reason why it is important to document such things as piston p/n's, etc in the engine logbook. Also, if an AD note should be written on such a part it, having the p/n in the log saves having to pull cylinders to verify what p/n piston is there, or to disassemble the engine to find out what oil pump gear is installed, etc.

Sorry, the airplane and the parts and service manuals are about 300 miles from me right now, so I wasn't able to look. I have the gasket set, but it's with the airplane and I didn't want to fly up there and not have everything I needed.

Thanks for all the info....Taylorcraft's just seem to attract grumpy old guys. Speaking of which, there's a Falcon prop on Ebay right now.

If you need a base gasket, I'm sure I have several new ones on the shelves. Let me know and I'll pop it in the mail. As the guys mentioned though, a gasket kit should have one too.
