  • insurance? who and how mutch

After spending a few hours looking for an insurance policy the best deal so far has been Avemco $869 a year. They will cover off airport landings which I tend to do al lot of. Also you can make quarterly payments. I am 30 years old with a little over 400hs tt including 100hs tailwheel and only a SEL license. I asked for $15k hull coverage and the airplane is hangared. How does this compare to what the rest of the tribe is paying??? My EAA mebership does not seem to be worth any discount. No longer an AOPA member, do they get a discount?

Jason, here in the UK we have just about the same figures as you. £15K hull value, hangared, (and £1/2M liability), premium about £800 per annum.

The difference is that the $/£ rate is about 1.7, so our premium could be about $1300 in dollars so to me sounds like you have a good deal.

    Just my opinion.

      Try AUA. 800 727-3823
      RC McGee

They gave me a much better deal (including coverage) than Avemco. They also didn't skyrocket their rates the second year of coverage.

        Insurance

AIG quoted me $770 for full in-motion coverage. They also have taxi insurance which is what I got because the strip I fly out of has pretty rough taxi ways.

I switched to AUA last year. They were $200 less than my previous AVEMCO policy, with about the same coverage as you mention Jason. AOPA discount was 5%. No discount for Vintage Association like I thought, but I was told they move the discount around to different associations occasionally.....

$1050 with Avemco for $45K hull and liability. Some others are slightly lower, but the way I was treated by Avemco after an off-airport landing (engine stoppage) was worth the few extra dollars.

              AIG through AOPA

              Jason,

I went through AOPA to get a policy. They procured policies for both my planes with AIG. I pay about $730 each for full coverage. I'm an ATP with about 6000tt and 400+tailwheel. I'd say you got a pretty good deal.

I'd suggest for anyone who flies general aviation to join AOPA. Just getting their magazine is worth the price of membership and they do great things to protect general aviation freedoms. I think post-9/11 it's more important than ever. There are plenty of people in government who'd like see all small planes under lock and key and place major restrictions on GA operations.

Good thing about AOPA is they will quote a couple of insurers. The first quote they gave me was about 800, I asked for something cheaper and the came up with Global Aerospace for the low 700 range. Been with them 2 years and I am happy. Full coverage with 15 on the hull and 1 mill. liability.

                    Jason,

I have AUA (Mac McGee is my agent as well) for insurance,

When I got my license it was about 925 first year for 15K hull plus liability and I got an EAA and AOPA discount plus a reduction after the first non-claim year. It is my second year now and I am at 635 a year. Just FYI. Good luck with the T craft from Dart's

                      Jason,
I was the new owner a year ago, asking this question. When I looked around AIG had the best rates or were within a dollar or two of others. There is a local office here in Frederick MD, and I like the thought of being able to walk in and talk with them in person.
I didn't get hull insurance hoping that I could fix anything I broke.
I got the liability at $1,000,000 per occurrence, bodily injury and property damage including passengers. Each passenger bodily injury limited to 100,000, and medical expense limited to 1,000 each passenger.
The plane is kept hangared, I've got a little over 500 hrs, half of that in taildraggers, about 47 in type, and flew about 40 hours last year, (stinkin WX).
Anyway, my initial premium was $351. I just recieved the new quote and it is still $351. The AOPA quote was $366, w/ the 5% it would be $347.70. And if you weren't already a member add the membership fee. Not worth a couple of bucks to change right now, and not sure if they are located w/ the main office here in FDK. My 2.5 cents worth.
