  • Tail Wire Bolts/Washers

Hi, can anyone help me please? I am struggling to read the part references for the bolts/washers that connect the tailplane bracing wires to the fin/tailplanes as on my drawings as the printing is poor in places.

I have identified the bolts etc that were fitted before its stripdown and have new replacements, but I want the know if there is anything special about the washers. As the wire end fittings go over the bushes in the horizontals and fin and their holes are conseqently larger than normal for an AN4 bolt I am expecting to see an oversize washer under the bolt head and nut to clamp them adequately.

The best I can make out from the drawing (and I don't want to guess) is both an AN960-616 (3/8") Washer and an AN 960-416 (1/4") under the bolt head and the nut.

    Any clarification would be appreciated.

Also, this raises the question; are legible copies of the assembly drawings available and from where? Mine have been reproduced at A3 (11x17) from larger originals.

    regards

    Colin

The AN970 is a large area washer. dash 4 for 1/4" and dash 3 for 3/16" bolts.

Aircraft Spruce has all the dimensions, maybe the dash 3 reamed for 1/4" will work???

I don't think so; the 970 are too thick & too wide; they interfer with the curve of the strap. Good idea, though. I suppose you could bend them where the curve is.

I ended up making my own.

Does Barber aircraft still have them? If not, try

The original 940-416 are all gone here. Rumor has it that the 1/4 SAE automotive washer is the same! Look around for good ones; OR you can do like the F-19 during the Feris era ; She used a longer bolt and put a
AN960-616 on first then a AN960-416 on top ; two washers on each side to do the job of the original 940-416 ...... Somebody did find NOS 940-416 on the list a while back ; but very good 1/4 SAE zinc coated work fine
              ( according to the rumors).

Ten seconds with a file and a vise will likely make a standard AN washer "chamfered" so it does not interfere with the strap.

                  Re: Tail Wire Bolts/Washers

Thanks for all the advice on this.

In the end I bought some DIN standard stainless steel washers which were to suit 6mm bolts, of the required thickness and a larger id than required. I clamped a number on a bolt and turned them down to the required diameter on the lathe.

                  All is sorted now.

I have about 6 sets of the correct washers for the Tail Brace wires. 940-416. Send me a private E-mail and I will mail a set to you free, as long as they last.
