simulated or real IFR in a taylorcraft works this way for me: If anything hairy is seen ahead, I do a 180 and land! Right Away! I've been banged around in an aero commander, in a Beech, and in a Mooney. No way its going to happen to me in a taylorcraft! At 72 I am alive. 4 good pals, all good instrument pilots are gone. ALL flew beyond their abilitys in each instance. One was a CFII.
Fly the NDB approach but use the hand held GPS to navigate. First fly to the field (the GPS will tell you when you are there, do the procedure turn and descent as shown on the approach plate. It is fun (under the hood with safety pilot) and helps to stay sharp with instruments. Turn and bank, airspeed indicator and altimeter are all you need--and it counts as simulated instrument time.
