  • Trimmer cable replacement

I thought this tip might be worth passing on:

This weekend I finally faced up to a job I hadn't been looking forward too, replacing the trimmer cable in a covered fuselage. However, it turned out to be very easy.

I joined the new one to one end of the old using about a foot of 1/16" electrical heat-shrink tube which was shrunk onto each cable. It was then carefully pulled through the various supports/fairleads to the tail where I had to split the join to fit a new fairlead, the rejoined and pulled back to the cockpit.

Heat shrink is not very strong and I think if there was ever a next time I might put something like kevlar thread fishing line into the joint to improve its tensile strength.

    regards

    Great tip!

I'm still sore from the last time I did the contortionist thing and climbed into the aft fuselage.

Last time I did it I just used an electrical butt connector and crimped the ends together and pulled it around. George

That is how I replaced my rudder cables. After the new ones were in place I also wondered how strong the bond was. Well I pulled and pulled and pulled till it was stretched way out but still held. So I don't think you need any further support. On a side note if you slide a piece of that shrink wrap on before you do any nico press stuff it covers the extra end that stick out of the cable sleeve very neatly.
