1320's on a 65HP?

I was kind of bored today, and started thinking of somethings to do with my airplane. And I was wondering if anyone has flown a 65HP Taylorcraft on 1320's. Am I being too ambitious? I don't want to get rid of my plane now, she is my baby (you know how it is), also don't want to spend that much money right now. I don't have a lot of experience on floats; only flown a 160 and 180 cub so I know I'm spoiled for anything else. Thanks for the advice ahead of time.

Think 1/4 throttle on the cub and it should be a fair comparison! Actually that is what they flew back in the 40's. I would figure one person and very little gear.

They did a lot of things different back in the 40's that many would think is crazy these days.
How much do 1320s with tcart rigging go for these days?

Ward, Joe has it figured out...also, the way you will want to use the plane in Ak...you need the 85 or 90 hp horse. The 65 hp will really hone your technique on floats, but it's a marginal setup in my humble opinion. Are you going to try to be at Valdez again this year? Dick

A 65hp tcart is a really good plane for honing skills in general. At this point Im not doing much serous bushwacking, just some cheap (so far) learning. I would like to go to Valdez again, not sure what my schedule will be looking like. I am going to put on the 26 akbw's this spring hopefully, and tinker with my brakes so I can get decent landing results. I got stuck in the sand on the runway at Ekuk (where my wifes family fishes) so I decided it was time for those suckers to go on. There are lots of beaches and sand bars out here around Dillingham. I am already itching for summer again!

Ps. I already have a bit of a floatplane prop on it, I think its around a Mac. 74-38. At least that is what's stamped on the prop.

Ward, hang on to that prop! Also go to Barnstormers.com and work through on the "Taildragger" selection...you might call that fellow with the J-3 ad and see what he's asking for what appears to be a set of 1320's. Might give you an idea on price. Also, I'll keep my eye open for a set. Meanwhile, keep a measuring tape in your pocket and get some measurements off of any 1320 and 1400 float setups that you run across. Keep a little notebook to record everything. I cut a set of PA-11 rigging down to fit my plane. Rigging material is expensive and a little thought can save you some serious money.

What mods are required for putting floats on the airframe? I saw these, but it has champ rigging; http://aeroalaska.com/viewad.asp?id=50023874486100047, and maybe a little worn??
I wonder how many 65hp floatplanes are out there? I remember reading one article about a guy who flew a J3 (65 maybe??) on wood floats. It was a real cool story.

I thought I read somewhere that bf1500s were lighter. Bur probably outa my price range.

weld-on or bolt-on fittings for the rear float struts; weld or bolt-on fittings for the water rudder(s) pulleys; a rudder bar to attach the water rudder cables to the aircraft rudder assembly; a cover for the void created under the cockpit, when the landing gear assemblies are removed, a water rudder cable "J" tube and hook for the cable handle and for the 65 hp setup, I'm pretty sure you need the ventral fin. (Forrest has the drawings for the fin, I believe). The fin requires welding some tabs on under the aft fuselage. I probably forgot something, but that covers most of it.

Ward, I just searched "float fittings", using the search feature at the top of the forum page...Dano had remarked that Baumann sells a bolt-on fitting that is interchangeable with EDO float fittings. Just a thought. I can show you how I made my weld-on fittings out of 4130. Dick

I'm down in Monte Vista, CO and it's not "Alaska time"...so it's about time to pull the plug...will be back Up North in a couple of months...hope to run into some of the the tribe down here. Will be in New Mexico, Arizona and Mexico, if plans go right.

I have had the privlage of flying two dif' taylorcrafts on floats with the 65 hp motor.. Light it was greaght. As far as float fitings i bought mine at atly in anchorage. weld on was the one i got but they had the bolt on two.....
