New to this forum and seeking advice. I'm a Canadian aircraft mechanic and trying to sign out a BC-65 after some work was done on it and would like to see the manufacturer's data plate. We've look all over but found nothing. Does anyone know where it should be mounted? If we can't find it is a replacement available from Taylorcraft?

Re: data plate
Mine is on a sheet metal panel under the lower left side door sill. It is a removable piece of the interior. I will try to locate a picture of it. 1946 BC12D.
My Father-in-Law's '39 BC-65 data plate is located on a similar vertical wood panel under the seat facing forward.Terry Bowden, formerly TF # 351

Re: data plate
e-mail me DIRECT.... NO you can not have a blank .... READ Part 43 .
It is a "letter of authorization" as outlined in the regs about "lost or missing data plates" It is issued by the local FSDO or authority in your country , simple matter, you may need a "conformancy inspection" I ALWAYS ask you what happened to the original one...... it is the airplane , maybe it out there flying around somewhere.
I have outlined this procedure many times.... any PMI or IA or A&P should know what to do.
here is a link to the old Plane Sense,, still good stuff and fairly current . check with you Mechanic or Inspector too!

Re: data plate
WHAT?
The requirement allowing me to change a data plate is not in Part 43. See Part 45.13(d)(1). Paraphrasing, it says...The person maintaining the airplane (not the person making or selling data plates) may change a data plate as long as it acceptable to the FAA Administrator.... This applies to engines, airplanes, propellers... and yes FSDO is involved. But there is NOTHING that says I can't obtain a blank data plate and mark it myself. Granted, I can't mark just anything on there, it has to be acceptable to the FAA.
This reminds me. Noel Allard has done this service for antiquers for many years. I haven't checked with him, but he probably has Taylorcraft blanks. His company makes flawless reproduction top-quality ones.
OH... he does. I just looked up the file from when I bought one for a Travel Air. In fact, he has 17 different ones for Taylorcraft, including some of the placards as well. The one for mine is $30 (March '07 price list). I had forgotten about his data plates.

Re: data plate
Forrest, WTF!
I sent you a request for data plate in May of last year with letter of authorization, etc. etc. and check. Two months 3 emails and 2 phone calls later you tell me you lost my paperwork. So I send the whole thing again (lucky I kept copies). Couple more months of unanswered emails and unreturned phone calls and I finally give up, I figure you really don't have anymore data plates and don't want to admit it.
Now here you are telling these guys you have data plates. What's that about? You wanna sell data plates, how about sending mine. It's been 8 months, I'm still waiting.Bob Gustafson

Re: data plate
yep that was a misprint , Part 45 of course. I have the FAA from many regions calling about these data plates, my local FSDO says keep doing it the way I do it. Certain Taylorcraft factory owners thretened lawsuits in the past. I do the 699 & 700 ships a different way.
It is the holder of the TC that is supposed to do all this . I have had visits in the past on "used' parts , shock cords, data plates and drawings. Once in a while stuff comes in piecemeal and it gets lost ..... sometimes nothing makes sense on the request , like the recent flurry of excitement about two F-19's ...... one of them somehow got back across the border from up North. I have been away again off and on all Dec & now back ....
I am going into airport office Thurs and will plunge forward.Taylorcraft Foundation, Inc

You may change an existing dataplate with information acceptable to the administrator...like adding the word "CONV"....45.13(d)(1) only speaks to the information on a data plate and does not authorize a replacement. This guy may sell "flawless" reproductions....but that's all they are. Gregg Horrell
