  • Aerographics "Gerber" mask

Decided to paint "N" numbers vs appliques. Ordered masks from Aerographics (great people to talk to - very helpful) and they came branded as "Gerber" (the other, more expensive option is "Avery"). Out of the 4 masks (2 wings, two rudder), one of the rudder masks had a very aggressive adhesive that remained on the surface - very gummy and difficult to remove. I am going to reshoot that surface. I spoke with Marilynn who told me they rarely see this problem with Gerber, and not at all with Avery products. As an aside, Marilynn told me that the Taylorcraft logo I chose from Aerographics was the 1st one she sold in her 9 years with the company. Anyone else have any history on this logo?

How long has it been since you shot the finish and how many coats have you applied in the last week? If it left a residue then more than likely your finish had not cured enough to handle the mask. I have dealt with stickier masks, but I always wait several weeks before applying any decals to make sure the finish had cured.

Thanks for your note...and good advice. I am attaching some photos taken by Mark Julicher today. Some control cables were replaced today, and we are beginning to start firewall forward. Doc

        Hi Doc
That sure is looking great--the two-tone paint, rudder trim, and large numbers really give it a classic antique look. When it's, finished you and Mark
need to fly it over to San Marcos sometime.

Thanks Buell. The tail numbers were the 3-7/8" you recommended after our last telephone call. You can see we put them where they would fit - they look nice. Just ahead of the dorsal fin is a "spade", which I am calling the tip of the Draggin' Dragon's tail curled around the tail. My wife nixed the name of "Dragon Lady", so I have a working name of the "Red Dragon" Doc
