  • Another Spark Plug Clearance Solution

    Hi Guys,
The annual on my friends T-craft has me digging again for things to improve and make better. This T-craft too suffers from the top plugs very slightly rubbing the cowl canoes. Enough that it bugs me and will eventually cost him a wiring harness. I found another solution that is approved. Champion 62S spark plugs are approved for the A series, and C series, although NOT the C90 & O200. I bought some on a whim cause I found them dirt cheap, and as expected they are sorter than the UREM40E's that are currently in the engine. They have 5/8" tops, and the nut potion is a meaty 1" diameter. Just enough to keep things from rubbing and give a little breathing room. The 62S is a shielded single electrode plug (ala car, lawn mower plug). Going to run them in the top and see how they do. Heck, as cheap as I got them NOS in cosmoline if you change them every time you change the oil, they'd be a steal! The weather/wind is supposed to be good enough here to fly Monday, I hope to put a couple hours on it. I'll let you know the results as far as running goes, but I'm sure they'll do fine.
Below is a picture of a 62S on the left, a UREM40E in the middle, and an AC88 (C26/M41E style) plugs for comparison. And the second is a picture of the electrode. The other 2 are self explanitory.
Heck, cutting open 60+ year old cosmoline gauze and the origional boxes was worth the price I paid if I use them for decoration. I bought some extras, and now have access to hundreds more.
    CJ

I know, and BY's are fine for Lycomings especially O-235's. And they are 20+ bucks a piece, these are less than $2 and fixed the problem. And making an owner happy by saving him money is nice. And he has plugs for life. With the money that saved him I finally talked him into a sump heater.

              Tribe,

his name is Roger Anderson 919-478-4322, he has about 500 left.

              $10/pack of 6

Per TCDS E-205 these ARE certificated for A-65-8's. If they dont perform well in mine I will use them in my Pietenpol.

Any reason why these wouldn't work on an O200? Does the electrode protrude any farther into the cylinder than the REM40E's?

I may have asked before, but does anyone know if the 37BY's will fit under the cowling, on the two rear top plugs, without bumps? I'm thinking of the benefits of reducing the radio noise source down to the two "cans" in front.

That's him. At that price I'll probably get more just to have around. Flew 1.5 today with them on top, mag drop was less on them than the UREM40E's and handheld worked great. At that price why not. Was enough to fix the rubbing on this one.

That is what I used for all of my top plugs, but I also made my cowling. Tim
