  • Dessicate

I've followed Forum advice and built a condensation tower to help dry air from the compressor. Now I'm building an in-line dessicate filter - fittings at either end of a 1 1/4" dia, 10" length of pipe and fill will silica gel.

Anyone else build a dryer like this and was your dessicate like sand or like beads? - Mike

    Beads..

Why not just get a harbor freight air dryer? They run off 220 just like a comericial compressor. Tim

If anyone needs silica gel I have tons of it.

The stuff I picked up is fine like sand and I'm concerned the 'screen' I've put at both ends won't hold it in. Larger grains (like beads) would be better.
If your beads can be dried and re-used, I could put a pound or two to good use- Mike

Well, I'm well along on the dessicate approach and 220v is not readily available where I'll be. - Mike

            Mike:
This is what I did when the bird was put to sleep.
Place the silica gel in socks [woman's nylon stockings are best !!]. Place about one (1) pound for each 30 cubic foot of volume. I had three bags of one pound each in nylon stockings hanging inside the fuselage when the plane was in storage, plus another pound hanging in the cockpit. I also placed half a pound stocking in the air intake @ air filter and sealed it with a plastic bag and duct tape. Added about 1/4 pound stocking into the exhaust and sealed it in the same manner. Get the dessicant plugs from Spruce and replace the top four plugs with it. Change the oil and add Phillips Anti-Rust Oil [about $ 23/gal from sky ranch]. Covered the wings and fuselage with old bed linnens.
            Hope this works for you.
            Regards
            Ralph

Ralph - what do you mean 'put to sleep'? are we talking about the Tcraft you and Tom are flying? What happened? - MikeH

Is the "new one"... it being put to rest for the winter while we continue to fly the "old one". Just completed the annual on it and all looks good. Come on over and visit. I'll be out there these 4 days.. mostly in the mornings. Tom has good "well water" coffee !!

This is like a bead just a little smaller than the harder bigger bead. I have those also in an indicater blue, turns pink when exhausted. I use a screen and it holds just fine.

To regenerate put in a bread pan in the oven on 500 for 1/2 hr 45 min.

I used to build ozone generators and I used it to make dryers for them. I will mention also the little 10" will not last long. On the Ozone generators I used 4"x6' PVC pipe. This will last about a month.

I will get a couple of gallons boxed up. I have a small amount of indicator beads that you put in a clear pvc 1/2"x2" so you can see when it is ready to regenerate.

                      Re: Dessicate

I got a great deal on a Hankison HMD series membrane style drier on eBay. It uses a small amount of air blown across the membrane to condense out the moisture. Works like magic, but if you buy one new from a dealer, muy expensivo. No dessicant and as long as you use a pre-filter/oil separator it's supposed to last forever. Mine's been going for over a year without any problems.
