That is the correct drawing (D-8061). They are on the inboard and outboard aileron brackets only.

The center aileron bracket has a built in metal bracket that supports side loads but drawing D-8070 appears to show similar bracket supports for the center aileron bracket. I do not have enough info with me at work to verify this but the dimensions seem about right and it shows 4 per ship which would do two brackets (1 per wing).

The middle bracket is completely different and supports itself with the aileron push pull rod, and cable pulley on the L-2. Coves only wood on L-2. Neither can be removed as the wing fabric attaches to it. The mag brackets are postwar only and very bad about corroding as well. The prewar ones will interchange though and much stronger IMO.

I had a chance to study the center bracket a bit today. To bad they did not put a similar diagonal brace on the outer brackets.
I think I will weld some up when I redo the bird in a few years.

Can you weld Magnesium without setting everything on fire? I think that's the stuff the weapons guys make "thermite" out of...

If you have an inert enviroment void of oxygen to weld in. Otherwise you will have one hell of a fireworks show and a fire you won't be able to put out. It requires a very specialized certified welder with proper equipment to weld mag.

I don't think mine are magnesium as the parts are all welded together.

I have lucked out on this addition.
The fabric is Poly Fiber.
I am going to afix the ply braces with poly tac and then put some fabric over them to increase the bond.

All the L-2 brackets are welded.

Just as an aside. while in the Naval Air I had to go through fire damage control school. We had to try to put out a mag. wheel on fire. We did get it done, but it took a 2 and 1/2" fire hose, right on the wheel, in an controlled environment, to make it happen!
I had an F-8 Crusader go in right behind my barracks, (about a 1000', 300 meters away) by the time we ran down there, all that was left was the tail section and some of the jet engine. The pilot ejected and landed safely right beside the fire.
This was in the days before they put a small jet engine on a seat. His seat was a Martin Baker (MK-4, I believe) with two large shot gun shells that went off in a timed sequence. He was a a little shorter after the ejection! Some pilots recovered enough to fly again some did not.
