  • Oil Question (A65)

    Hi All,

    I know this has probably been covered elsewhere on the forum, but "oil" is kicked out as a search item as being too short and "lubrication" ends up pointing toward odd things like controls and landing gear pivot lube holes, etc.

    My shiny new Essco POH is at home with 24369 and I'm on the road, thinking about an oil change. It's getting close to 25 hours and it's pretty cool in N. Carolina at the moment. I'd like to order some oil while I'm away so I can change it when I get back.

    The wx man says the average winter temp is 44 deg F with the average low being around 31 deg. F. Any recommendations on what oil to run in my A65 over the winter vs. summer? It has Aeroshell 100W at the moment.

    (I open this can o' worms knowing engine oil is one of those subjects prone to lots of opinion, all of which I welcome!)

    Aeroshell multigrade is the stuff; 15W50 if I recall correctly.

      Josh,
      Asking about oil will get the same number and varied responses as asking the meaning of life, or who you voted for for president and why!
      You can always drop down to 40 weight for the winter if so inclined or for a little more cash, and a lot less than the 15/50 Aeroshell, get some Phillips 20/50 and forget about seasonal changes. Don't forget a new crush gasket for your oil screen too, AN900-28 or MS35769-48 is the newer number. If you have electric at the hangar, you can also consider an oil sump heater.

        I don't use the Aeroshell because the ingredient that meets the requirements for the AD on Lycoming H2AD engines doesn't like old gaskets. I put Aeroshell
        15W50 in a J-3 that had always been as dry as a bone and oil started dripping everywhere. Talked to the AeroShell rep. and he said yes, some do that. Changed to Phillips 20W50 and it was dry again in a hour. Never had those issues with a newer Lycoming. I use Aeroshell 100 in the summer and Phillips 20W50 in the winter. Has worked well the last 18 years.

            I used shell 15 - 50 and hade NO leakage! I gues the addatives cleans the engine and the dirt what seals the old gaskets.
            Now use W 100 and preheat or dont fly below + 5 C.
