They profited from it (as I would have done in their shoes, so no slur there).

It might have cost them a bunch to persuade the FAA, possibly more than a private individual could afford.

    No practicable reason...just the law.

Individuals on this forum (they know who they are) were instrumental in getting not only the XRay AMOC approved, but also the extension from 2 to 4 years.

In summary, Dan, we all know it's a load of hogwash...so few have failed the AD inspection (if any), but we have to comply with the regs, and unless we are in the regulation-making business, then we have to go along with the rule-makers. It's silly, but it's life.

I wish you well with your endeavours; let us know how you get on.

We do not need to be in the regulation-making business, the reg states that you have to comply with the AD in any number of ways, one of which is alternative method of compliance. They are not saying that you have to do it any one way just that you need to get approval. The FAA does not really care as long as you have data to back it up.

I say lets get the data. The more pilots that work on finding a solution the better. I will contact a DAR hopfully this week.

      Re: Struts

20 or so years ago there was an AD issued on Piper Cherokee wing attachments. One or 2 Cherokees used in pipeline patrol (??) had experienced structrual failures. Not to long after, when hundreds of planes had been inspoected and no problems found, the AD was rescinded. If someone were keeping accurate count of how many struts were found that needed to be replaced, a well organized attempt to rescind the AD or extend the inspection period to 10 ro so years could have a good chance of being successful...

I own a Cherokee, if I remember correctly, it was not totaly eliminated. Aircraft with wing damage have an inspections required at some time limit. All Cherokees need to be inspected at some crazy time like 35K hours or something.

Thanks for setting me straight. I don't own one and consider my self fortunate to be able to remember as much as I did...

That's what I am tryin to say, as a group if we get our act together, come up with real data, organize it, prove it, then present it as an AM of C.

At $ 45.50 per foot( from Aircrafts spruce) of streamlined tubing and 40 some odd feet needed to make the struts = 2000.00 some dollars is it worth it?

Dn, just remember the number your working with is $2,000 not the factory price of $3,500. Made a big difference for me in deciding what to do.

Where do you get them for $2000.00?

I was working on a plan to just get rid of the AD using the old struts. If there is nothing wrong with most of the struts that are being checked all that has to be done is show the FAA an alternative method that keeps the struts in serviceable condition.

I have been gone for a week down to the Stearman aviation auction, (A real bust). I will start to work on it again now.

Mine came from Airframes. After they came on line everyone elses prices came in to line except "The Factory".

Mine came from Airframes too. Forrest said that there was such a flurry of export to the UK that questions were asked to the UK CAA of failures in the UK.

It was of course because of the then (now lamentably gone) favourable exchange rate for we Brits.

Hi Dan Michaels ( new guy apparently) . YES that is why we are collecting the data on this forumn to extend to 10 years or more. Tell me all about the strut material from your sources. At $27.50 per foot it was a lot easier to have the other sources make the struts. I would like to see them made out of 4130. We have a lot of good used struts around that pass inspection fine, properly maintained , they will last a long time.
