  • Engine Upgrade on Taylorcraft L-2 DCO-65

I am trying to contact anyone who has, or knows of someone who has upgraded the engine on a Taylorcraft DC-65, DCO-65 or an L-2, PTC A-746, to 85hp or 100hp.
The FAA is asking for STC’s on this type of upgrade to accompany our 337 Major Repair and Alteration Form, before giving us approval. We have two, but they need more.
If you or anyone you know has made this sort of upgrade, would you please advise so that I can get this upgrade to my plane, approved.
Background: I flew in an L-2M in WW11 (1943) as a radio operator. I now own my beloved 1943 L-2M and in my 80’s, I am getting a little too stiff jointed for hand propping the blade and then jumping into the plane. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

    Gene,
If it helps, I have a copy of the paperwork for an L-2 to 85 HP swap complete with fuel flow, propeller, and other test data that someone else did. Don't recall if it was a -12 with starter provisions or not. Was going to use it to show it had been done before to the lovely feds and hopefully ease the certification when a friend wanted to upgrade his. Never did the swap, my buddy sold the airplane. I'll have to dig it out. I kept it when he sold the airplane in case I or someone else needed it later.

I dug out what I had. Don't know if it'll help anyone, but here's the scans. Some of them weren't the greatest copies so I scanned them hi res so hopefully the info will come through. You can click on the pictures and open them bigger and should be able to save them from here or from my photobucket account. I don't have a copy of the origional STC that is referenced in this paperwork.

            Hi CJ,
This is the first time I have entered a request and therefore the first time I have answered a reply.

I have two sets of paper for this kind of an upgrade and your offer of another would be of great value in getting the FAA to favorably look at my request. Please send me a copy of the papers you have as soon a you comfortly can. I will convert all of the paperwork that I can accumulat into an e-mail attachment and post it on the forum so that anyone in the future can imeadiatly make use of the information without digging around as we have had to do.

              Hi Ron,
As soon as I collect all of the paperwork that I can, I will covert it into an e-mail attachment and send it to you. If you can find anymore please let me know so we can help each other.

Not a T-Craft, but I was able to research approval of a C-85 in a PA-15 Vagabond. 337's that were done prior to October 1955 are APPROVED data and as good as a STC. With very little time and money I was able to find two.

I am starting the process to see if I can convert by BL to a BC and this:

"337's that were done prior to October 1955 are APPROVED data and as good as a STC"

would be very helpful...were did you find that information?

                    Best Regards,

Re: Engine Upgrade on Taylorcraft L-2 DCO-65

                      Joel,

                      Inspectors Handbook 8900.1 chg. 24
                      Chapter 4-1178
                      Paragraph 4.f.
CAA 337's prior to October 1955 are considered APPROVED DATA.
Go to Landings.com and find all L-2's with a C-85 and write down the N-Number and serial number. Go back to FAA.GOV and order the CD. Print out all 337's prior to October 1955 and you have all sorts of approved data.
                      Dave

                        Gene,
                        My DC-65 - seriel #4113-was converted to C-85-12 in 1953.
I have the "Major Repair And Alteration Form" that is dated 5-27-53. This form is blessed with a CAA engineering stamp. Along with this form are drawings. Also the resulting weight and balence dated the same.
I can make copies or scan them for you to include with your other gathered material.
