  • Mountain flying

    I have a BC-12D with a C-85-8 in it. I am considering a trip to Pagosa Springs, CO next summer. The elevation there is 7500 feet. Can a 85 HP Tcraft handle that altitude? If I do go up there I will be taking off in the early morning before it gets hot. I am in Houston and used to flying at sea level.

    Re: Mountain flying

    D.D., My old T-Crate(and it was a dog) flew daily from a field elevation of 4,141 msl.(BNO) my lowest pass going anyhwere was 9,500 msl.
    Follow the safe practice's of Mountian flight,watch the OAT's , density alt. and enjoy the scenery.

      Re: Mountain flying

      I flew my 65 hp tcraft from Ogden Ut, elevation 4500, and went to places like Jackson Hole WY and Evanston WY and had no problems. I even flew @ 13.5K across the Wind River Range in WY, with a passenger.....Just make sure you are light as you can be and you fly early!......Density altitude will definatly Kill you if you are not careful. Re: Mountain flying

        I haven't been on the board for months. I'm sorry and have missed you all. Flying from Houston to Pagosa Spgs. CO. shouldn't be a problem as long as you go early AM.

        May I suggest landing Santa Fe overnight, then first light set out for Pagosa. I did the same flight in hot weather last Sept. Keep it light, monitor the density altitude, don't be afraid to chicken out, you'll be fine.
        With regards and best wishes to all;

            Forrest;
            Everything is Anschutz around here. The footprint of this tycoon is large. When you were at my house -- you were 100yards from his home. We'll climb over the back fence and go see Phil. Stay here, you are always welcome (24-7).

            I've been deep into many other things and working on stimulating projects. Plus lots of family duties with older parents and failing and falling in-laws.
            Keep in touch -- you know my number.
            Love and kisses to Patty and Kelly-Belle and you too (you big ol gallute).
