  • Best A-65 exhaust gaskets

I'm making new headers for my plane (experimental Pietenpol). I'll be replacing the exhaust gaskets. What are the best type to use? I bought some thing stamped sheet metal gaskets, then read a comment that made me think they might be best. What is the best gasket in your experience, and why?

    Thanks for any help!

      Forrest,

The gaskets I already have are these on the Aircraft Spruce site:

Are yours a metal gasket or some fibrous material? Fiber seems like it would seal better. Do you think they'll hold up better than these thin stamped gaskets? If so, I'll gladly take some. Thanks for answering my pesky questions, I really appreciate the help.

        Re: Best A-65 exhaust gaskets

I had to replace my exhaust gaskets shortly after I bought my plane. I used some copper looking gaskets that had asbestos sandwiched between two two thin sheets of metal. After they blew out within a year I found some gaskets called "Blow Proof". They were several times more expensive, but they have now been on for the last seven years with no problems.

The original flange on the Taylorcraft is very thin and does deform , the
" copper asbestos" , really "copper new stuff" takes up the slack, use RED RTV also on the gaskets upon install. The blo proof are very thick and sometimes cause an interference if the studs are long enough in the first place. The two piece sold for the 0-200 and shown in a photo above sometimes do not seal do to the deformed flanges . IF you have new exhaust, good flanges, they will work.
I still like the metal with a fiber center. Old tractors use them too!

Forum member and guru-at-large L-2 Gary suggested to me that if you use the thin metal ones like in the photo above you must use 2 of them nested together to get a good seal.

                Bill,

Put some blo proof gaskets on there and forget about it. It will be the last time you have to change them.
