Kevin - proper use of paint stripper

Kevin (or any paint stripper enthuiast) -

Does anyone know the most effective use of paint stripper? After application and after bubbles form are the active chemicals still working on deeper levels?
or would they work better if I scrapped off the goop and reapplied stripper?

I have one area of glue on the aileron cove that I"ve gone over three times and there are still spots as hard as a rock.

Sometimes, cover the area with something like a plastic bag or newspaper helps. Give it lots of time to work.

I'll leave a steel part over night and it's much easier to remove the paint than if it sits for an hour. Stripping has been a major pain on my refurb. 5 or 6 cycles

Mike,a lot depends on the temps,wind,humidity,etc. The hotter it is outside the faster the stripper will dry out. My best advice is to keep the area wet with stripper,don't let the stripper dry out. If you start getting a bunch of build up then scrap off and start again. Stripper,a couple of toothbrush size SS or brass wire brushs,and lots of patiants & elbow grease. It will come loose in time. Also,when you deside to quit for a while,spread a healthy coating of MEK on it an leave it for a while,this too will help weaken the glue.

I buy stripper in 5 gal bucket, use a polyethylene bug sprayer, the brass ones corrode severely...and spray. I then let it sit until it stops bubbling I then use a bondo spreader to scrape the sludge and repeat until its removed. The main ingredient in a good stripper is methylene chloride and if you hose them off, they will need to be completely dry before you can reapply the stripper again. Another method is to get some Barrymans carb cleaner in a 5 gallon bucket and put some antifreeze on top, it keeps out the fumes. Let the small parts soak and then just remove the basket and TaaaDaaa, done. (;f

Mike, I'm doing wing overhauls and my aileron coves had some sort of ancient goo that was tuff as a two dollar steak.It took four sessions with some good stripper(no, not a pole dancer) to get clean metal. I've been using
NAPA's 6802 Speciality remover,and "don't" get it in your eyes.

At my point of rebuild I love this thread; however. Thank You for this enlightenment! I had never thought about having a 110lb female in nothing more then a G-string as a helpmate! OOps forgot about who makes this possible! With out my wife's help and sense of level headed outlook I would not be enjoying my rebuild right now.
