It takes ten minutes to test for alcohol, and ten hours to disassemble a Taylorcraft sitting in someone's farm field... if you're lucky.

Like I said before, the newer car engines run on car gas with ethanol, so there is some reasonable solution out there somewhere. But it is probably very unwise to knowingly or un-kowingly put ethanol car gas in an un-modified airplane.

Rather than trying to get ethanol approved for aircraft engines, how about lobbying your politicians to get it out of all fuels. It was a major environmental mistake in the first place. It costs as much in energy to produce as it saves in fuel, doesn't reduce the carbon emissions in burning gas, takes agricultural land out of food production and helps raise the price of food globally and encourages cutting down more forests. When you account for all that, the net effect on global warming is negative.

Also, let's not forget it has less energy per gallon. Gasoline has 115K BTU's per gallon and ethanol only has 76K BTU's. The AAA says if you have to pay the same price for 10% blend, buy the 100% gasoline. The blend gives you about 3% less fuel economy. It is funny the poltitician are not telling us the complete story.

Ban the Ethanol!
There is no net gain in the use of the ethanol in any compustion engine.
E 85 for what. If we dont have any other fuel, it would be a different ball game.

Dan the problem is that the 10% stuff is put in as a sacrifice to the great smog god. At least in the Golden State. It is therefore untouchable.

Ray has a good point. Why has the price of fuel not gone down in Florida. If we are paying the same price then the corm growers are just as bad as the OPEC group. he corn growers of America or the oil companies are making a larger profit now that ever and we the public get the shaft again. Paying the same price for ethanol as gas but getting less engine power output.

Don't forget that in the long run it actually takes more oil and more money to produce the ethanol.

As I understand it, you only get 30% more energy than you put into the process. This assumes you are using corn.

2 years ago I hade a incident with Ethanol as it came in use in Ontario.
No full RPM on a runup. She made it to 1700 rpm, what was it.
The fuel hose had soften up and swelled internaly, closing of the the fuel flow!
As alcoholes mixes with water and water and aluminium does not get along it is problem in aluminium tanks and tubing.
So be carefull! In Ontario Shell has no ethanol in 91 octane, and to date July 5th I have not found any in 91 octane from the local Esso dealer either.
Test any mogas you use! Shell or not.
Some of you are saying ethanol increases profit, is it sheaper per volum when gasoline? If so, the prize of corn is to low!
What would make our breakfastes go up in prize as well! It has allready!
Farmers are NOT paid what they are worth, so let them stay in the FOOD production, no more corn for alcohol for fuel!
