  • Can anyone identify this Scott tailwheel part?

So here's a good one. I bought this Scott tailwheel part and it was advertised as being labled 3-24BS and so it is. It is also new, but old stock.

I have other Scott 3-24-BS tailwheels an they seem "normal". But not this part, it fits a 1-3/4" spring, has 1/2" hole for the bolt to attach it to the spring and the bushing hole is 3/4" diameter. It's a giant version of the part I am used to seeing.

It has two numbers on the tag- 2366268 and 3-24BS. Pics are attached, any clues or guesses?

    Thanks, Dave.

It's the pivot casting for the solid 6" Scott tailwheel. I have one here, I use the whole thing as a paperweight.

It's a cast alloy. Worth not a lot without a useable unlock mechanism, and these are so fallible (they fail first) that the object of your desire is not worth the cost of the alloy it's made from.

    Just my opinion.

    Any further questions?

      Hi Rob,

That's what I thought it was and that's what I wanted to buy.

      But the dimensions are odd.

1/2" bolt to attach the spring (usually 3/8")

      1-3/4" spring (usually 1-1/2")

      3/4" pivot shaft.

I wanted a replacement for one (6") I have with a loose pivot bushing but this one seems too big.

Maybe its for an 8" wheel???

Dave, you can have mine for nothing, or a donation to the TF. My casting has a pinned plate stamped with P/No 2366288 Model No 3-24B

3/8 bolt to attach to leaf spring.

        1 1/2" leaf spring

Pivot shaft dia unknown (still attached to all the fork)

        Let me know?

Re: Can anyone identify this Scott tailwheel part?

          Hi Dave,

The Stinson 105 used a 1 3/4" tail spring. Scott made a non-steerable full swivel tailwheel for that airplane (ST-7). Here's a link to an old Air Associates catalog I scanned and posted at www.PopAv.com (lots of information in these old catalogs):

The ST-7 had a special bracket for the tailspring and a special fork size, too. I've not seen the 3-24BS listed in any catalog but perhaps it was the version of the 3-24B made for the Stinson 105? The "S" might have designated Stinson? Just a guess.

            Thanks Dan,

            I think I have a paper weight now. :-)

I think it is the Stinson part.
