  • Radial Powered Taylorcraft Model A ?

If anyone has plans for an experimental A model T-craft, and wants to experiment with small radial engine power...

I have just taken in two WW2 vintage Lawrance 5 cylinder 37 horse radial engine projects. These were used as the APU generator for the B-29 bomber.

They look like a half size Kinner, cute as hell. An early light 37 horse Taylorcraft could be a possible candidate. It would have to be experimental.

I have learned they were used on a few small experimental airplanes such as a Heath and Driggs Skylark, and one or two others. Since they were designed to run laying down, some work will need to be done on the oil pickup to run them upright. They may also need thrust bearings because they were designed to run a generator not a propeller.

One engine is relatively complete with mags and I believe a carburetor. One engine is three boxes of parts, cases, cylinders, etc. My best estimate is this is enough to build and maintain one running engine.

Does anyone else think that a tiny radial engine on the front of an early Taylorcraft would be the cutest little puppy in the litter?

There is a Piper J3 out there with a small radial. Even if it is not a T-Craft it is cute.

Cool idea Bill, someone should do that (just not me, I've enough projects)

I'd forgotten about the Cub, the J-3P with the Lenappe Papoose...I had to check - there are a whole 3 of them left on the registry.

And speaking of radials, wouldn't it be great if someone would make new Warners? I've got a lot of ideas for airplanes to bolt up to the back of them.

There was a pic posted here awhile back of a taylorcraft being built at Broadhead with a LeBlonde on it. Cool as hell.

If memory serves, I thought it was a Lambert R-266 .

If I was going to put a round engine on a Tcraft, I'd go with the Salmson. 9 cyllinders, and sooooo smooth!! awesome little engine!!

There are (5) Salmson's at Brodhead including one on the prototype Taylor Cub.

Not to mention torque! Looks as if it could swing an 80" prop maybe....44 pitch?

I know that I'm probably "spitting on the Pope" here, but what about mounting one of those engines on a 3/4 scale replica of a PT-22? If the engines look that much like small Kinners, that would be a cosmeticly correct replica.
                        Just a thought. Brie

Hard to tell, but that looks like a Warner to me. Notice the case bolts between the cylinders. What do you think?

Isn't there a small radial being made in Australia, I believe that it is called a Rotec or something like that. If they have their sales problems sorted out, that might make a neat looking T-craft (make it look like a ??)
