  • Fair Price For A Metal Prop?

A friend wants to sell me a McCauley Metal prop. (Yes, I need a prop!) It is a 71-46. It has re=cond stamed on it. The paper tag is still on it from the overhaul in 1977, so I don't think it has many hours on it since overhaul. He took it off his Funk when he bought it and put on a climb prop. I did fly it on my c-85 t-craft and must admit, it is smooth. Assumming if I sent it off and it passed inspection for specs, can anyone guesstimate what you might be willing to pay for it?
    Thanks

I sold my McCauley for $1000.00. I measured it for length to make sure it was the minimum length. Local prop shop wanted $600.00 for overhaul.

As a fair rule I try to price any used parts(that I know are good, servicable, etc.) at half of the new list price. Most taylorcraft parts are impossible to do that with but props, engine parts, etc are still available to get a price for. A new McCauley prop will run you around $2400-2600. I sold a 71/48 McCauley to a fellow a couple months back for $1000 plus shipping and it was perfect, but it had never been sent off to be checked so I let him have it a little cheaper then what it was really worth...plus he is a t-craft member. If the prop has ever been cut, rebuilt, repitched, etc then that will bring the price down a little also.

I have bought many metal props for $350 at auctions. Routinely sell shorter ones for $650-$850. If it was a 74", easily worth about $1200
