    Has anyone ever checked what the temp rise is on thier T-craft with carb heat? Not RPM change, the actual Temp change? Tim

      I have a sensor that would do it pretty well. Best I could do though would be to check it at the inlet to the carb box where the air comes from the heat baffle. Would have to sacrifice a piece of scat tube. Anything else would be a pain unless you just happen to have a carb temp sensor installed.
      I'm rather curious myself as I have the Luscombe baffle on my -85 and it doesn't make much of a change in the RPMs when engaged.

        Well in the IA seminar last Friday, we discussed the effects of the Carb heat not being hot enough and in cold temp, it will induce icing....I think that you need a 80 degree heat rise to be effective, 40 is not enough. Tim

          Has anyone tried to JOIN the heat from the cabin heat side of the exhaust with the carb heat side, to deliver a much stronger and hotter air supply to the carb? This would only take a Tee fitting for joining the SCAT tubes.

          I know this means you won't have cabin heat available. But here in Los Angeles at least it never gets nearly as cold as other parts of the country, and I'd rather be chilly and wrapped in jackets than warm gliding down power off into a city street!

          Can anyone else verify the need for 80 degrees temp rise in the carb air to defeat carb ice?

            I called the Engineer from the ACO that deals with some of the engine STC's, I left a message and hopefully when he calls back, I will have some more accurate info. Tim

              Here is the skinny on the temp rise. 90 degrees F rise at 75% power, 32 degrees f outside air temp and standard conditions......Tim

              He mentioned AC23-8a, there is a chapter on carb heat requirements....

                Last fall when i was on floats I was back taxying and the throttle felt funny like it wasnt getting fuel. I pulled the carb heat and it seemed to get better so i thought it was carb ice. On floats you get alot of carb ice. I crused around the lake and i thought it was alright. On take off it was ok i made a left tunout ove the trees maybe 50 feet above them and then it just died no sputter nothing i made a right turn and bairly made it back to the lake. just when i touched down it started running again at idle when i gave it throttle it would want to die. I added carb heat and no change. I made it back to the ramp and had it pulled out of the water. I was a little shook up when i seen a small tree branch that i must of pulled out of a tree just before i landed.
                The ai pulled the carb and took it apart what we found was it had some kind of goo in the bottom of the bowl and it plugged the jet. I still dont know what it was or how it got in the tank. It wasnt the shalack from the cork on the fuel gage There was nothing in the screen in the gasalator ???????? The ai went thrue the carb and i havent had that problem again.
                since then i use all the lake and all the runway and its on the back of my mind if it would of happend 5 seconds later well i dont want to think about that...........
